7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Venezuela, collapsing buildings in the capital of Caracas - ur mamas caracas make my girthquake
The Americans are, seemingly, on their way. Link/Archive
Even smaller countries, like the Dominican Republic, are mobilizing resources to help. Link/Archive
An example of the missing posters that are being shared on social media. I have seen them on X, Instagram and in various WhatsApp statuses. Most of the missing people are from La Guaira. Link/Archive
The timing could not have been worse. Rescue services are extremely underfunded and underemployeed. The storm happened just when the sun was leaving the country. Water service is dogshit in most of the country in multiple occasions firefighters could only stand and watch as they had nothing to quench the flames with.
There is nothing to stop the fires from spreading in the affected zones.
Beyond the State Dept Foggy Bottom Weasels, keep an eye on the USS Nimitz and the USS Kearsage a Wasp Class LHD. They just finished up an exercise in the Caribean and headed for home last week. They've only made it as far as Palm Beach Florida. That would give them a lot of Helicopters and Marines to work with. Plus the Kearsage can function as a Hospital Ship. (Technically so can the Nimitz. But with her Marines disembarked Keasage becomes a much bigger hospital. Nimitz and Kearsage look to be the closest US Military Assets in the area, outside of a couple of Coast Guard ships.
One of the closest cities to the epicenter is Puerto Cabello which has what is apparently Venezuela's largest and busiest shipping port. If the Puerto Cabello port is destroyed or severely damaged it is seriously bad news for the country economically and in terms of being able to receive materials for support and reconstruction.
Large ships are apparently being sent from La Guaira to Puerto Cabello which indicates to me that Puerto Cabello, or at least the port facilities at Puerto Cabello, are less destroyed than La Guaira is.
I hate to ask this, but what happens now? It looks like every single structure at and near the epicenter has suffered catastrophic damage. And what can be witnessed doesn't touch how much underground infrastructure has also been ripped to shreds.
Will these entire cities and elsewhere have to effectively be razed and start from scratch? Is that even possible?
Same thing that happened in Turkey: Everyone gets a FEMA tent for 2-12 weeks (likely longer), then damage assessment of buildings and debris removals which can take up to a year, then reconstruction and economic recovery which can take 1-5 years.
The bright silver lining for VZ is that its now a US ally and will benefit far more than if they continued under Maduro corruption and Russia's umbrella which could, at best, have offered them thoughts and prayers. There will likely be US investment and development in the coming years and if they can get the oil flowing and refineries up and running at lightening speed, the money can be used to help rebuild as well. This is a wonderful opportunity for the US to shine with aid and help. The fact that VZ is no longer under heavy financial sanctions means direct aid can be wired from relatives livings abroad which will further help people recover.

Everyone report to your assigned positions and prepare to get fucked as everyone starts mobbing for cases of water and toiletries. I do not miss having to search for fucking diapers and baby wipes. Those two things are always in short supply after a disaster. Prayers for Venezuela.
Funivision, the government org that is supposed to you know, deal with this shit, is yet to say a public announcement. So all info we currently have comes from the US.
Under the Maduro government the Venezuelan scientific organization for studying and reporting on earthquakes and seismic events was folded into the Ministry of People's Power for Internal Relations, Justice, and Peace. This happened in 2018. It just wasn't that important, I suppose.
Shit was shaking real hard where I live. So far, in my city at least, no reported deaths.
I got soaked rescuing my cat because nigga decided to jump out of the window when I was getting his carrier, but he's alright, wet like myself but alright.
A 7.1 earthquake is pretty bad, and would put this on the list for strong ones. That said though, it should not have caused this much widespread destruction across the entire country. Unless of course none of the buildings were built to standards for construction in earthquake zones.

The infrastructure is undoubtedly run down and buildings are not up to code, but the second earthquake at 7.5 probably did most of the damage (remember that the moment magnitude scale is logarithmic, so the 7.5 released multitudes more energy than the original 7.2).
If the airport is fucked, it might be a while before any international aid arrives.

Anything made of unreinforced masonry like Brick, Adobe, Cinderblock is just fucked. Judging by pics coming out of La Guaida, there was a lot of that.
It also depends not just on the building itself, but what it is sitting on. Stuff like the landfill the airport was sitting on undergoes soil liquifaction. It doesnt matter how good the building is if its built on shit.
Anyone knows how Valencia and its suburbs are doing? My friend lives there, I messaged her few hours ago but so far she hasn't been online. I pray she's safe.
