Delcy Rodríguez, acting president of Venezuela:

-There have been more than 20 aftershocks

-Building collapses have been reported in Caracas. There are power outages in Caracas and La Guaira.

-The metro and rail systems have been suspended.

-There will be no classes for the rest of the week.

Delcy Rodríguez stated that the government will conduct a comprehensive assessment together with the economic and social teams to address the devastation caused by the earthquake.

Delcy Rodríguez declares a state of emergency throughout the country:

Delcy Rodríguez: “In general, public services are continuing to operate nationwide.”

Maiquetía Airport is closed due to severe damage.



She calls on all doctors in the country to report to their posts to treat the injured.

The timing could not have been worse. Rescue services are extremely underfunded and underemployeed. The storm happened just when the sun was leaving the country. Water service is dogshit in most of the country in multiple occasions firefighters could only stand and watch as they had nothing to quench the flames with.

There is nothing to stop the fires from spreading in the affected zones.
