This is going to sound very stupid and pardon my ignorance but...

We all know goths exist on the internet but has anyone actually seen one outside of the internet?

I saw a punk a few weeks ago, with an actual proper mohawk and the latest 1989 fashion, including safety pins. I spent the next minute wondering if I traveled back in time somehow

Yeah, it was exactly that type of look, big red mohawk, leather jacket covered in patches, those tartan trousers. Poor bugger looked pretty well worn too, so I guess he just never took it off.

Like MysticMisty I saw many in middle/high school, which was :powerlevel: only a couple years ago for me.

They also crop up at anime conventions a lot, since many weebs are also goths (or scene for the younger set, or steampunk for white dudes in their 20s w/too much money) . Because convention spaces are "judgment-free zones," loads of people take the opportunity to dress according to their preferred subculture.

I personally think that like any fashion scene you wear / are into is fine if you're actually confident in yourself and know who you are. However, Goths/Emo's are normally both emotionally immature and socially stunted so instead of using it as an expression of themselves they use the community/fashion as a crutch.

I've heard "Nobody likes me because I'm emo." and "My emo friends raised me more than my parents." and it just shows what these kind of people are like.

Nobody likes you because you haven't showered in over a week and because you wear Emo clothes that don't look good on you instead of ones that do.

It's probably the same for Harajuku kids that live in eastern countries. Clinging onto the community instead of being individual. It's ironic as all hell imo.

I apologize for the :powerlevel: but I used to be sort of a casual Goth in middle school and high school, and even then, I always found the hardcore Goths to be cringe-inducing.

Especially the older ones who were around during Goth's heyday in the 80's and 90's and refuse to grow up and let go. Those types are the worst, especially if you're playing RPG's with them.

Yeah, I loved to dress up in all black and liked grimdark stuff back when I was younger, but you gotta grow up eventually.

On a more general note, Goth and Emo both seemed to have died out in the late 2000's and early 2010's. Hot Topic now caters to the nerd and hipster crowds instead of the Goth and Emo clientele that put them on the map, and it seems that hipsters and SJW's are the new pretentious youth subculture du jour.

That's sad.

I still see goths at cons, especially cons that have an older attendee base. Occasionally I'll see one in the wild too but it's pretty rare.

Honestly as obnoxious as goths/emos/scene kids can be I'd take them any day over the SJW genderspecial tumblrina types that as others have mentioned seems to have taken over as the subculture of choice for boring middle to upper class suburban kids trying to freak out their parents.

That said you did see shit like otherkin and faked mental illnesses and Myspace bisexuality with emos and mallgoths back in the day so it's not like the SJW shit just came out of nowhere.

EDIT: haven't a lot of emo/former emo and goth kids also become SoundCloud rappers now? Because it seems like that's also a thing that happened.

Well it didn't really die out. It just faded into obscurity. I still see some emos on the streets, but I haven't seen goths in ages.
I do miss seeing goths, too. It used to amuse me a lot to see 'em walking down the streets being their gothy selves.

I'm certain it'll just get rare as the years go on.

They're all weak-asses in my book.
