The second-to-last ban/probate is what interests me the most. Do moderators seriously not have the power to ban someone from a specific subforum? It has to be either temporary or permanent on a site-wide basis? And until then all they can do is finger-wag at you?

Variable names, look up tables, DNS, and log entries, IIRC.
The log entries one blew up the forums for a bit in a way they didn't understand, but some job was set to run when some other event wrote something containing "faggot" to a log.

This is how most forum software operated until the last decade. Even "advanced" software, outside of expensive paid solutions like XenForo, relied on you manually creating roles to restrict people from a specific subforum.
