Tell me about it!

At the company I work for (small, construction-based, income after expenses under $2.5M), for 2025 both my numbers and our CPA numbers matched EXACTLY. Tell me why, then, when we actually submitted them that the IRS came back and said that we were getting a refund of about $33k? I mean, I don't mind the refund and the owner was ecstatic, but WTF? Both an experienced amateur and a certified professional ran the numbers, came up with the same one, and the IRS still said WRONG! So confused.

As Rekieta would say you're a bullshit liar

The Government would never in a million years voluntarily admit you overpaid even a penny in taxes.
Ah, there is an incorrect assumption here about how the IRS works. Remember the Government Beauracracy is not a business. My mother worked as an IRS Tax Examiner for 25 years. Specifically looking at Business and Corporate filings. Note Tax Examiner not auditor. She would review business filings looking for errors. Finding and correcting errors is the metric on which they were judged and awards were given out. It did not matter if the error was in the governments favor or the businesses. They could care less. They are government employees. The actual outcome is utterly meaningless to them. Only that the forms are filled correctly. There was an episode of Futurama that nailed it perfectly. "How Hermes got his Groove Back" or something like that?

Russell Greer - so awful that people would rather discuss taxes.

Which got me thinking. Am I right in assuming gig workers are essentially self employed? We know he'll work two or even three jobs at a time. I assume ViaTron handled some of his taxes, but what are the chances of him filing honestly on his gig work and his college funding, let alone keeping his address current?
Could Hardin access any of that information to assist with Greer v Moon in the inevitable future cases he's going to attempt re: Greer's constant IFP poverty plighting? I have the feeling if he had to pay up front it might slow his roll.

I've gotten a letter from the IRS with a check for a small-ish overpayment on regular income taxes over a credit they decided I was eligible for that I didn’t think I was. There are some upstanding people in there.

One thing that really surprised me was when we were dealing with a death and had to get death certificates filed with Social Security, which is pretty famously like the worst DMV stereotypes on steroids and the most local office (very rural), about 40 miles away, called us and said they saw it come up in the system and they already done the work and to just drop off a copy of the death certificate when we were in the area. "You have enough other stuff to deal with at the moment" is the exact quote, IIRC. Everything was taken care of, no issues with spousal adjustments or anything. My jaw was on the floor for a week, everyone was dreading dealing with the SSA. Rural America is just better in every way than urban America.

There's some good people in government work. My experience with social security is pretty good once you peel back the first layer of the onion. It helps to deal with offices outside of the big cities too. It's just like everything else, for every ten retarded assholes who just don't give a fuck you have one gem carrying all the weight. The key to a happy life is to be that person.

Im sure there's lots of people out there with mobeius as bad or worse than Greer that figured that out and are indispensable at work, loved by their friends, and even have a partner to suck them their penis. Likely Russ will never learn that if he hasn't already.

From personal and professional experience, dealing with governmental employees is a coin toss. One can get a governmental employee who is genuinely friendly and helpful for one encounter and get another who is just as useless and impersonal the next time.

I'm sure most Kiwis reading this thread know disabled people who are pleasant to be around and have a healthy circle of friends. RG and others who behave alike are so insufferable they don't realize their lack of social skills is what people find off-putting and wrongfully assume people hate them because they're disabled.

When I was in college the head of my department had a son with pretty bad cerebral palsy. I would babysit him from time to time and he was the sweetest, funniest, smartest kid I’ve ever met. You had to learn how to understand his speech, of course, but he was just a delight. (Pretty sure that’s why I never have trouble understanding Russ)

He sadly died when he was around 12. I attended his funeral and the church was packed. I’ve attended that church my whole childhood and had never seen it that full. The front of the church was so full of lovely potted plants they had to put some down on the floor with the pews. Everyone loved him.

Then there’s Russ. A minor disability in comparison, and no one likes him.

For the purposes of your question yes, Doordash/Grubhub/UberEats does not calculate or withhold tax on his behalf.

The various gig companies have to file paperwork with the IRS documenting how much he was paid, so it has all the ammo it needs to catch him if he tries to cheat. Whether it will bother is another matter entirely, who gets audited seems completely random.

No they don't and they don't have to. You work for them as an independent contractor under a 1099 which requires no withholding tax

Unless Greer really does go ahead with a(nother) motion to have the stalker child Hardin removed we won't hear much until arbitration is over which could take anywhere from a couple of months to a couple of years.
Honestly, the thread should be locked until then. We aren't even waiting for the 6 month tardy reports.

I don't either, but I've put that down to living in a couple different countries and working around a lot of people that have English as a second language. Once it tune in to their cadence and pattern I have no problems. I don't think his speech is that bad TBF.

You're supposed to set it aside and pay up when it's tax season.
This was my supposition and where I assume his $5k business account came from, namely cheating on his taxes. I wouldn't be surprised if he's got a hard cash hidden somewhere - maybe that's why he was so pissed when his car was repo'd, he had a thousand bucks in an envelope taped under the driver's seat.
