it smacks of the rifle cult that the US army and USMC have always had. We used to get really good rifles out of it at least. Springfield 1903, great rifle. M16A2, great target rifle. Even the M14 was a great rifle for accurate fire out to 1,000 for targets the size of a man. plus it has great sights. M1 has great sights too.

problem is MIC graft and the vestiges of this cult has chosen a poor rifle. The silents and early boomers that designed the above rifles are all aged out leaving young boomers and gen X in charge who just have the inkling of atrophied memories of the rifle cult. Big round = good rifle for example. so we get a shitty rifle with bad sights, poor construction and a round that could be good if it was left to bake in the oven a few years longer.

they really should have just went with .270 WSSM. it's short action and has the same performance as the 6.8 (same caliber). just throw the NGSW bullet in there and go. the development is done.

But then you don’t get to grift the government (and by extension the taxpayer) out of millions of dollars for cartridge development costs.
WSSM has issues with being a barrel burner. The smaller the round the worse it gets. .243 and .223 WSSM are known to have sub 1000 shot barrel life due to excessive throat wear. Unless they have some advanced barrel material to super secret cooler burning powders .277 furry is likely having the same issue. I have no data on it but I would guess an M7/M8 barrel is shot out in about 5000 rounds which about 1/3 the life of an M4 barrel.
