Ah, this next one will sound retarded, especially since it is a visual novel "game", a furfag one at that (mind you, there's no nsfw stuff in it). It is Fang from Snoot Game. At the start of the story, she is a angsty nonbinary weirdo highschooler, basically, she's on the path to having a messed up life/future. In the good ending, she becomes a normal woman pursuing her artistic dreams and after some years ends up marrying the mc. The bad endings are very, very sad... I dunno, kiwi-bros and kiwi-sisters, it just hits me in the feels you know.
Oh that is sad.

Another manga I read somewhat recently was Oshi no Ko. I think Kana and Akane were my favorite female characters from that. The whole "entertainment business" is not something I know much about or care about much, but I think it was an interesting setting. Having all these characters trying to make it in show-biz, dealing with their insecurities and struggles.
If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend watching the alternative fan ending.
It's not just that the ending is happier, it also gives - per the topic of this thread - the female characters more autonomy than the original ending.

Johnen Vazquez females were pretty good. I liked I Feel Sick and Gaz is the best character in Invader Zim

Also Dorohedoro is pretty cool , its written be a female mangaka and has a decent range of female cast members.

As a fan of Dorohedoro and someone who is excited for Season 2, Noi is a really good and fun character. I like the contrast between her being buff as fuck and her smoke revolving around healing.

New manga recommendation: Spirit Circle.
Don't let the mangadex description put you off, it's a reincarnation story, not a school romance.

What do you guys think about the female characters in Higurashi and umineko, they are not your generic Hollywood girlbosses however often Time they are explored deeply as how could they as people dos horrible things, Yet it doesn't justify them but rather explore the reasons why they did it .

I did not expect yo relate to characters like natsuhi or rena

I hated pretty much all of them except Miyo. I thoroughly hated the game, it's like Gogol's Dead Souls in that the only truly good character is [presumed] dead and missing from the story for the duration of it. (I stuck around for 7 chapters because I liked the plot and some of the writing in chapter 3 and had a partial theory about it. At chapter 7 I realized it was a fakeout, there will be no "answers" to chapter 3, it's a big JJ style mystery box.)

The original art is ugly. I upgraded it to the Playstation version.

Rena has a retarded speech quirk and generally acts retarded and/or perverted, and later on the dickbag threatens her with rape or something, and she's like ha ha so hotttt.

"Mion" (the tattooed girl) has ugly balloon tits and acts badass, until she sekritly craves to be a girly girl (all badass girls are sekritly dying to be pampered princesses, don't you know). That's actually a misunderstanding, but the misunderstanding eats up playtime. Then it's revealed that Shion is the badass one, and Mion is a complete nonentity, she doesn't do anything throughout the 7 chapters.

"Shion" is initially badass in her chapter (5) but later she just goes along with her evil family and becomes a nonentity. Her and Mion's family is all evil cunts with horrific parallels to FGM. Satoko's second chapter (7) is stupidly contrived and sadistic on the level of an atheist interpretation of Christianity, Satoko being the bearer of original sin and the evil cunts being a sadistic masturbatory god whose forgiveness she must deserve.

Rika is "really 1000 years old" pedobait and is >implied to have the hots for the actually underage Satoko.

Satoko is initially badass, but is then devolved to pedobait and never gets redeemed. There are multiple opportunities for her to do something in her second chapter (7), speak up on the phone, set a trap, etc, and she's just a passive victim throughout. (She's not evil, she's just a bad character.)

Miyo is at worst neutral, also she's attractive and livens up the story woth her antics. I spotted her back in chapter 1 and rewatched the credits to get her name, which wasn't mentioned in the game. Killing kids is a bad look and you're not supposed to take it in stride (I did tho lol), but the whole place has demon AIDS and is ruled by a child-torturing Yakuza cult. The writer chose to write a contrived, thoroughly plot-holey story with fantastic elements and children deserving of genocide. As a game designer once said, if you write a game in which Jews drink the blood of Christian children, the Holocaust will be a good act within the game world, but it's still repugnant to sit at the table and play the game.

Disclaimer: There are nice-looking female characters in the intro movies. I don't know who they are and I've no opinion on them.

As "classic" VN characters go, I nominate Giselle the Maid from The House in Fata Morgana. The story is terrible and all other characters are terrible (I can rant about it on demand), but Giselle is good, interesting, and deserving of happiness. (The game's a goffick novel and worth playing for the music.)

Barbara Covet and Sheba Hart from Notes on a Scandal. The film makes Barb gay for extra drama but book Barbara is a fucking horrid lady, and you can't help but feel for her. The book is quite difficult to read; Sheba, the young middle class art teacher grooms a working class boy, and its implied she was sort of groomed by her husband (she was in uni but wildly naive and sheltered, and then replaced by a younger girl). Barb manipulates everyone because she's so lonely and unloveable and desperate to be loved. She particularly hates and is jealous to women in relationships, again the film makes her gay but in the book its explicit that she never got the male attention she wanted and was never pretty or even likeable, and it all sort of spiralled.
Fantastic book with some AWFUL women.

It's a shame SVU is such dogshit in the later seasons becagse ADA Casey Novak (and Alex) is great, she's sort of tomboyish and weird/awkward and iirc bullied as a child which is why she goes so hard on a set of teen girls who kill a classmate. She was supposed to have a romance with the Native detective at one point but then he kills someone which is a shame because they could have had a great dynamic :( tomboys need love too
