Some people in the fanfiction horrors thread made a good point as to why people ship yaoi. Male characters tend to be more interesting than females characters because they have flaws and character arcs. I usually watch male centric shows so their female characters aren't going to be less developed.

Do you guys know any shows with good female characters? You can post anime but I'm not watching that.

You've locked yourself out of at least 50% of your options. But in the interest of fairness, here are some of my recommendations.

Sarah Conner from Terminator 1 and 2 (ONLY 1 and 2, don't watch the rest)

Ripley from Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) (again, only those two, fuck the rest)

Romancing the Stone, a romantic-comedy-adventure film (Jewel of the Nile, the sequel, is shit)

Lilo & Stitch (IT'S NOT ANIME, IT COUNTS - also only the first movie - maybe 2: Stitch has a Glitch if you're being generous. Noticing a pattern yet? Good.)
also some examples from Golden Age Hollywood:

It's not anime, it's MANGA. Three I've read recently:
  • Witches - Igarashi Daisuke
  • Coffee Moon - Bota Mochito
  • Apothecary Diaries/Kusuriya no Hitorigoto - Hyuuga Natsu and Nanao Itsuki

Ostatnio edytowane:
Specifically not the show, but the books and games. I find Yennefer, from the Witcher series, compelling.

It's hard to find interesting, multi-faceted female characters in shows unless it's a comedy, unfortunately. I'll readily suggest any of the women from 3rd Rock from the Sun, who're all funny and flawed: Sally's character, Mary, Vicky and her mother, Judith, Nina, and so on.

As for dramas, the ladies tend to skew bland, ultra-serious, or bitchy *sigh*

I'm not much of a media consumer because the process of trying to find stuff that isn't total fucking dogshit enrages me too much, but this one slaps really hard

Yeah, sometimes it feels like the entire personality of the female character (in anime I have to add) is dependent on her hairstyle and hair color.

I also want to separate between "interesting characters" and the "actress performance", because I've seen high quality, top-tier performance while the character itself not being that good.

An interesting one in a movie could be Sarah Connor, but they've already mentioned that here. I've also heard good things from Ana de Armas in Blade Runner, but if you can believe it, I still have not watched it. So I can't say for sure, or how much is attributed to her acting skills & how much to the character.

In games, it could be Kara from "Detroit: Become Human", which is ironic like with Blade Runner, because she is an android.

There are a million essays on how Miyazaki writes his female characters so I'll not go into the Ghibli stuff, but you're right.
How could anyone realistically expect to be able to tell from a glance which characters are fleshed out.
I mean look at this one.

Just a generic woman with brown hair, brown eyes. Might as well be a background character.

It's actually very good how it's done. It's actually left up to both the viewer and the MC how much of her is "real" and it becomes a central philosophical question of the film.
Then again, some viewers just went "DA HOLOGRAM GIRLFRIEND IS HOT" so good luck finding people to talk to about the subject.

Written media on kiwifarms about proud trans women whose struggle makes them even realer women than actual women.

Princess mononoke
The antagonist especially:
There's a war on, many young girls are forced to work in brothels to make ends meet. She runs a munitions factory and forge to make swords (essentially accelerating and fueling the conflict) and she uses the proceeds to buy girls out of what is basically glorified sex slavery and employs them, as well as leper outcasts to make more weapons and munition - her implied long term goal is arming everyone and causing a collapse of the feudal / samurai system that is the cause of all the misery and she is willing to do anything needed in the short term to bring this about.

Xe won't watch tranime doe

Characters don't matter in tranime most of the time; vehicle/base design, worldbuilding, and story per episode are all that matters. If you want "fleshed-out characters" read Bleak House or some other Victorian novel
Maybe if you're a 35-year-old man obsessed with cartoon lesbians

Agent Scully from the X Files
Agent Starling from Silence of the Lambs
Ripley from Alien
Rachel from Blade Runner

Hollywood used to know how to write interesting Female characters until it got infected by cultural Marxism. Ironically, the quality of female characters has dramatically degraded in this sad attempt to be more inclusive. The cold hard truth is that nobody is interested in a 5/10 (at best) mystery meat female protagonist and her fat black Mami sidekick (because ironically they still won't give these kinds of women lead roles - see the new Minecraft movie) Not even the minorities who this shit is marketed towards.
