Also, am I the only one who hates the Niga Clan? Before you kill their boss, they show up various places on the map in disguise, with their hilariously limp-wristed attempts to kill you. And that's funny, for a while. But then you kill their boss and they start showing up indiscriminately and it's like 'God, fuck off. You're not going to kill me already, so just give up'

It's a neat idea that becomes frustrating, yes. I did the Gerudo my first time playing, so needless to say it made much of the game a chore after. I do like the Giga Niggas Yigas with the big ass swords though,

It's le evil Shiekah, and their logo is... upside down! Truly the height of intelligent worldbuilding. Pay no attention to the fact that the Shiekah are the ubermensch of the universe who created the most advanced technology ever seen in Zelda, but they remained subservient to the Hylians? They have teleportation technology, MGSV idroids, and created the guardians... but they obey the royal family? Why?

Because apart from Fail!Zelda the royals have even MORE power backing them up. This branch of the Hyrulean Royal Bloodline have the full triforce. The reason BOTW Zelda was screwed was because her mom died before teaching her how to use her power. So the royals kept that shit on a need to know basis. Which implies they didn't even really trust the Sheikah with it.

The reason the guardians the divine beasts were "lost" was probably because they tried to use them against the Royal Family. They got their ass kicked. The Yiga probably decided to do their own thing while the Sheikah decided to just accept to be under the yoke of the Royals.

The Sheikah were cooler when they were just ninja and not super-advanced magitech scientist monks who build teleporters and giant robots, but have no impact on Hyrule's overall technological level.
Zelda in general was much better when they really kept to the Medieval setting, instead of being fucking Steampunk

I don't think it counts as steampunk. There's no steam-powered machines and it doesn't look like industrial era. It's like more like some kind of Bronze Age magitech shit. It's meant to evoke the feeling of like ancient lost civilization type stuff, but the modern Sheikah still seem pretty familiar with how it all works. Really, the most off-putting thing is that you're given a not-iPad to interact with everything. It kind of feels like a trend lately in games where they think they need to give the player a smartphone equivalent to feel hip regardless of how well it fits.

I always assumed it was supposed to be a Wii U gamepad, so IT'S LIKE YOU'RE REALLY THERE.
Yeah, it is that too. When characters are using it they're often holding it horizontal like a Wii U gamepad or a Switch. But generally when it's sitting around, or held on Link's side, or he's holding it to scan something it's oriented vertically, and the design on the back of it is oriented vertically as well, so it also looks like a smartphone.

The sheikah tech was perfect union of form and function in a game-land of Hyrule. It was all designed within the story for the sake of the game to actually happen including things like maps, fast travel, menu etc. This is pretty cool and helps suspension of disbelief.

TOTK does fast travel with Zonai shrines and the "brand new" Purah Pad, but the combination of the two doesn't make sense technologically in-universe or conceptually outside. I guess you could say it was due to Zelda giving Mineru the Purah pad to tinker with (I think that happened? Idk.) The incongruence is my main dissatisfaction with that game. Not counting opportunity cost for what TOTK isn't.

BOTW basically has the same plot as MGSV, obviously. You're not the guy, you're just some kind of brainwashed mascot in the future and you're just meant to not notice all the fucking holograms and robots and shit.

Yeah but I'm not sure if there's a better term to describe it. Steampunk is anachronistic technology in otherwise antiquated settings and that's basically what BOTW has.

I've always said that it was fuckin' smartphone. He uses it like a smartphone
I must be the odd one out in liking the sci-fi elements that the recent games have, though admittedly, they were better executed in BOTW than TOTK.
There's been a creep from Majora's Mask onwards (I mean, you have a camera but they call it a 'Pictograph Box') culminating in your immensely irritating robot assistant in Skyward Sword (Fi) and Breath of the Wild's futuristic technology. But I really preferred it when Zelda kept to medieval settings. If Nintendo were going to put futuristic elements in a Zelda game they should have done it when they were toying with it in the planning for A Link to the Past

It plays a bit like MGSV. All these games are the same these days. FFVII Remake looks and plays a lot like MGSV as well

I did note just how much BOTW seemed to be influenced by MGSV, especially in the gameplay department. Though the former is wins simply due to it actually being finished.

And heck, that’s actually what drew me into the game in the first place.
