Goblincore is a cultural aesthetic and subculture that celebrates the beauty in unconventional and overlooked things found in nature, such as moss, mushrooms, rocks, and other "goblin-like" elements. It values the idea of embracing a more rustic and chaotic lifestyle, often associated with goblins and their affinity for collecting odd treasures.

Goblincore started as an online movement in the early 2010s, gaining popularity on platforms like Tumblr and TikTok. It's a reaction to mainstream consumerism and a desire to reconnect with the earth in a more authentic and whimsical way. The term "goblincore" was coined to capture the essence of this unique aesthetic and the appreciation for the strange and unpolished aspects of nature.

Cottagecore is a cultural trend and aesthetic that romanticizes a simple, rural, and idyllic lifestyle inspired by the imagery of cottages, gardens, and the countryside. It emphasizes a connection to nature, traditional skills, and a slower pace of life. Often characterized by floral patterns, vintage aesthetics, and pastoral scenes, cottagecore embraces a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time.

Emerging in the late 2010s, cottagecore gained traction on social media platforms like Tumblr, Instagram, and TikTok. It offers a form of escapism from the modern, fast-paced world and encourages people to embrace activities like baking, gardening, and crafts. By celebrating the beauty of the countryside and a tranquil existence, cottagecore resonates with those seeking a retreat from the complexities of contemporary life.

I would like for this thread to be about artwork, literature, clothing, architecture etc. that fits these aesthetics. I've grown really fond of them lately.

I really enjoyed reading HC Bosman's classic "Oom Schalk Lourens" short stories, about rural life in South Africa during the Boer era, specifically in the North Transvaal bushveld (Groot Marico region). It has a very rustic, frontier feeling, and I think it really captures the essence of the Boer-Afrikaner farmers in that era and their culture. He wrote the short stories in the 1930s, based on his first hand experiences and recollections of living and teaching in the region during the 1910s, hearing stories from locals about things that happened in the 1880s - 1900s.

He had a follow up series of short stories called the "Voorkamer" series, which is much more biting in its satire and even a little bit cynical, taking place in the region but in the then-present of the 1950s.

More related aesthetics for anyone in the future who wants to find this thread by keywords (or for future historians of the "-core" phenomenon):

I love cottagecore so much it's unreal. I am so happy it's currently trendy and you are no longer called a grandma for wearing frilly flower dresses. The only thing I don't like about it is that they make the neckline's of all the dresses too extreme plus add unnecessary slits to them.

Finding a bra that works with this shit is basically impossible unless you are flat chested or have small enough boobs that you can wear like a sticky-bra or a strapless bra. It also kind of defeats the purpose of the whole romantic more conservative aesthetic to just let your boobs hang out.

I used to be really into mori girl/mori kei about a decade ago. Not enough to actually invest much money into outfits for myself, but enough that I'd spend a ton of time on /cgl collecting pics of outfits. I can't find them right now so I'm guessing they're all on one of my old laptops. But I've found some examples on Google:

Mind you I actually live in the woods, so it wouldn't have been that much of a LARP, but also, I knew from living in the woods that you need to do a lot of work that layered, airy clothing that catches on things isn't very conducive for.

From googling of goblincore, which seems to be the closest equivalent here, it involves more pants/overalls, which work a lot more for working in da woods. But mori outfits with pants were also usually my least favorite. But also, I found this cute dress:

Called goblincore, but also described as fairycore and cottagecore.

What you're looking for are gunne sax dresses. Really popular back in the 70s. Finding good vintage ones usually cost $$, finding vintage sewing patterns and making yours less $ but more effort.

I've been rocking 'goblincore' most of my life. I've always looked like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards. People ask me where I've been out hiking and I have to explain that I look like this all the time. Anyway catch me being chased by a gamekeeper through the woods after he finds me in his secret chanterelle patch that he thought only he knew about.

I like ti too but I refuse the notion that it is feminine. I want to find gnomes and give them a small coin so that they may become guests in my home and we can have a banquet. I inherited these little whimsical pocket dragons too. Here's an example and I might post the small collection I have:
