Depends entirely on US reaction. Trump placed a lot of eggs in this basket, and this will 100% delay his plans for the country. It was expected for the electrical system, and electoral ministry to be renovated by the next year, so free elections could occur, and so oil companies gained enough trust in the system to drop big investments to rebuild the oil industry. In so, making the US more energy independent, also the rare earths and gold on the mining range would be a nice bonus.

So now 3 things can happen:
1: He does a limited pull out maneuver to reduce risks. Leaving rebuilding efforts to the state government. All predictions are off in this case, I have no idea how they will deal with this, this happened just like a couple days after the current leadership declared that Venezuela had a debt of 240 trillions $
2: He goes full hog on it, funding renovations in a power play to completely displace the remaining Chavismo leadership. Seeking to make the State 51 thing real.
3: He does a limited but still present approach, to try to reduce the effects this will have on his schedule.

You listed 3 but my feeling is that it’s a good opportunity to let private industry go in and start doing their thing while also allowing the US to clean out some remnants of the old guard. It’s really hard to say as Cuba is next on the chopping block and Trump and Rubio aren’t about to let that particular nugget get away from them.

There’s also the Iran problem. Trump wants money to clean out the nuclear material but it pisses me off we would be footing the bill for that shit. I was fine with bombing the ever living fuck out of Iran but American taxpayers should not be paying to clean it up.

I think there can be a much better argument made to spend money in Venezuela right now. Iran turned off everyone’s internet so they can’t even post videos of babies and puppies suffering under American Imperialism. Given the fact that many South American countries are seen to be rejecting the commie shit, the best move is to shore up Venezuela with American industry that also makes sure “nationalization” isn’t going to happen ever again.

One of the biggest casualty multipliers will be the absolute lack of means to deal with something like this. I don't know if the turk goverment was this retarded but damn. I know I should not be surprised but fuck, a lot of rescue teams have basically 0 equipment, and are relying on people getting shovels and carts, or in supplies sent over the border.

Its worse than Turkey. Turkey cut corners in building the cities so they had no protection from the initial quake thanks to corruption, the response was a bit chaotic but competent. They excelled at the rebuilding effort but the important part now is the rescue effort which VZ is woefully unprepared for.

Turkey is part of NATO, has the Red Crescent (Islamic Red Cross), a fuckton of cash, and the Lira was stronger back in 2023. Venezuela has none of that and was just starting to reorganize. Natives can tell the better state of things, but Turkey was nowhere near as bad a Venezuela in disaster management. A lot of people are going to die in this. The Turkey quake killed about 60,000 including those in Syria.

Given how broadly this has impacted the Northern Coast of Venezuela, the chaos of the response is understandable. Tragic, but understandable. Much of the communication was severed. Just as night fell. Within the effected cities movement is restricted. We're not sure yet how damaged the intercity roads are. The railroad is shut down. And the main airport is shattered.

This is Latin America. In the Spanish tradition any response is expected to be largely the National Government. Regional and Local resources are limited.

Add to this that Venezuela is not really looked upon as a major earthquake risk. At least not by the people or government. While the academics know there is a threat there. It is mostly so quiet that nothing has happened within living history. It's not Japan or California, where everybody has earthquake plans and supplies. Where they drill regularly and school kids are taught what to do. It's more analogous to the New Madrid Fault System in the Southern US. It's known that it can produce catastrophic earthquakes. But hasn't done so in a Century plus. So preparedness is largely academic and not widespread.

The result is it will take at a minimum at least 48 hours for the first actual skilled earthquake response teams to reach Venezuela itself, nevermind the effected areas.

Today is going to be the locals frantically digging through rubble looking for loved ones. Using whatever is at hand. It will be pure triage. The Government is just starting to get helicopters up to get an idea of the size and scale of the problem. The Army, any Army, will take at least a day to start getting into the field to begin providing aid. And that will likely slowly radiate out from Caracas and wherever the large bases are. The fact that Venezuela has been a criminally corrupt state for decades likely means any warehoused emergency supplies were sold or stolen years ago.

It's going to take days for help to start arriving in some effected areas.

BREAKING NEWS | Looting reported at businesses in La Guaira after devastating earthquakes.

Businesses were left in ruins after the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday.



On the other hand. Still no casualties reported in my city, only a few buildings have been evacuated and damage remains mostly superficial, plaster that got broken up and ceramic tiles that fell off. It is estimated that at least 60 buildings have been affected or present damages of some sort.

Update: She's alive, half of her house collapsed but she has no injuries. She says that all the rescue teams are in Caracas and that there are thousands dead. It will be a like week before any rescue comes to Valencia. Shit's fucked.
 
The inspection in my residential complex has begun, so far so good. The engineers were a bit nervous about a column in my apartment that seemed to have a crack but they smacked it a bit with a hammer to drop the plaster and confirmed that the column is indeed ok, just the plaster that was cracked.
