Thomas managed to survive in environments like that for over 40 years. The dog could easily eat out of the trash, get money from the government and its parents, and then wait for family members to die in order to survive a little longer. Plus the dog is likely to not waste all its money of fake rocks so it will probably have that money for longer

I'm going to guess that the breeders didn't get it chipped and vaccinated and that they weren't keeping on top of parasite control. Irresponsible breeders sell to irresponsible owners.
