So, if we believe Nick, this is the chronology as well as I can piece together:

Taking him at his word, what kind of psycho invites his girlfriend over to watch football with the fam. And that's not a question. He was trying to thread the needle. He definitely fits the “need for admiration” and “lack of empathy” criteria, although I’m not entirely sure if “grandiosity” is especially pronounced with Rekieta, although I think it is there (Lawpope, humble-bragging about money, “good Christian family man” image). I wonder if people more well versed in his lore could fill in the rest.

Grandiosity = smartest guy in the room, "I made you," "I achieved all this [nothing, in reality]," etc.

It's been mentioned multiple times in the thread but this bears repeating.

These dynamics are incredibly dangerous.

At the moment I think Kayla is in the most significant danger.

Her most permanent defense is the children. Given Nick's documented history (as recorded in traffic ticket contact reports) of complaining about having to drive his kids, he isn't interested in having the kids to himself and anything happening to Kayla would leave them in his (and his parents') lap.

To your point about goals, as long as she stays drugged and compliant, tolerating Nick's deceptions re: sneaking around with April, Kayla is at worst an annoyance to Nick and April.

However, if she starts pushing to change the equation too hard, and either Nick or April get desperate and a little too wound up on drugs (especially if it's meth), she could easily have an "accident" involving her falling repeatedly on a knife.
April is dead stupid and emotionally in 9th grade (at best). She has proven time and time again that she will enthusiastically adopt any galaxy brain plan Nick comes up with. Being imprisoned in the house of whoreors with her phone TV will become unbearable, especially if her supply of "ice" gets cut off.

The desperation, the complete lack of impulse control, the raging character disorders, and the substance abuse make a violent ending very probable.

Counterpoint: It does not seem like Kayla does much of anything in the way of helping with the children--at least in the biggest Nick stressor of driving. She has expressed a dislike of doing so, and both Bob and Celeste have been roped into helping. Where is Kayla?

I would venture a guess that 'it is all your fault' and 'I could lose my kids!' (or similar sentiments) were expressed in the verbal tirade to her, and Keanu found that 'heinous'. We know Nick wishes for people to die and harbours vindictive vitriol for those he perceives as his enemy.

Not the one I was thinking of - it was more recent and was explicitly related to his legal business. I can’t remember if he described it as contract or business lease work, but he made it sound like something he literally could not lose.

IIRC it’s already been pointed out in this thread that he doesn’t advertise or appear to be actively seeking clients, so my assumption is that it would have to be family. If it were simply a longstanding client relationship, I assume the stink of a child endangerment charge and felony drug possession charge would have scared them off.
