I have a friend who has been playing it because he thought all the salt spilled over this shit was gay and he wanted to see for himself if it was really that damn bad.
Here's a list of what he found that's actually worthy of complaint:
1. It's got a shit-ton of cutscenes to actual gameplay and the story was lame.
And they aren't even good in the "interesting and compelling for their sheer narrative and quirkiness" like in the Metal Gear Solid games either.
For the most part, the story ranges from cliche to absolute cringe in the ones that advance the plot, especially the flashbacks to the hero's dad, who couldn't be more of a cutout of shitty humanity if he were made of cardboard and literal feces. Everything else ranges from edgy shit to hamfisted political crap in a game that isn't all that good at delivering any of it with any sort of nuance whatsoever.
We discussed how Doom 2016 had minimal story, but what was there just reinforced the whole reason you were playing: "Demons suck, go kill them.", and based on his take on things, the game would have been better had it just stuck to "Nazis suck, go kill them" without attempting nuance because the game was generally bad at it.
2. The PC port is dogshit.
The Steam Overlay cannot be used in game, it's got a ton of performance issues, and is generally optimized like ass for PC. The actual gameplay is fun, but only when the performance issues fuck off and let you enjoy it.
3. The marketing for the game was generally a shroud to sucker people into buying it for reasons of controversy and to drum up publicity.
While places like KIA were spilling spaghetti over how political it supposedly was, it was really the marketing was geared that was because dumbasses in Bethseda's marketing department thought they could badly springboard off recent political shit and use it to pimp the game.
The actual content in-game is generally too cliche and hamfisted to be political propaganda of any sort that would actually be effective, and even in universe the hero just says he doesn't give a shit about political crap, he just wants to kill Nazis, especially to one of the cliche commies who tries to play off the hero's Jewish origins as one of his motivations.
He concluded by conceding it did have legit fun gameplay when performance was good and the cutscenes fucked off long enough to enjoy it, but aside from that it wasn't worth bitching about, at least not for the reasons places like KIA and the salt right were whining about.
