I could imagine some alternate scenarios where things wouldn't have gone as badly for Germany, but most of them involve Hitler dying early, since most of the downfall of Germany was directly because of absolutely idiotic shit he insisted on doing, like prematurely breaking the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Just that by itself more or less ensured Germany's eventual defeat and it was more or less a matter of timetable after that.
I can't imagine many plausible scenarios where they managed to project power sufficient to conquer the mainland United States, though.
That's why a lot of people enjoy reading about history, because you begin to start understanding all the "what if" situations that occurred all throughout history that could have completely changed everything had things happened only slightly differently.
Speaking of the Nazi regime in Germany, so many stars had to align just right for Hitler and his group to even take control of the country. A lot of it was pure dumb luck along with the incompetence, hubris, greed, cowardice, indifference, pomposity, and about two dozen other appropriate descriptors of the major and minor players of the era.
If you ever wanted to know how chaotic and just plain insane Hitler's rise to power was (and you have plenty time on your hands) just read by "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany" by William L. Shirer. It's an incredibly long book but it's probably the most detailed account of everything that happened leading up to, during, and after Germany's fall, beginning with the birth of Hitler. It's mind boggling how many times everything nearly completely fell apart for him before he even had any power whatsoever.
Then there were the people who outright opposed him but thought they could manipulate him by playing along and trying to run things behind the scenes like Franz Von Papen, who completely underestimated how cunning Hitler actually was. And he was just one of a long list of people who tried to do the same, and whose fates were much worse than Papen, who at least survived the war and only was given a somewhat reasonable prison sentence rather than getting his neck stretched at Nuremberg.
But yeah, as much as Hitler's incompetence coupled with the fact that he basically had absolute power doomed any chance of lasting success in the war, and his long list of fuckups that nearly ruined his chances of even coming into power in the first place, he was without a doubt a cunning, ballsy motherfucker.
That war, the shit that went on before, during, and after from all sides, particularly the Germans, Soviets, and Japanese is a pretty good argument that Satan is real, IMO. I'm not the most religious person in the world, but as someone once said to me in a very grim yet matter of fact way, "Yeah man, the Devil definitely had his hand in that." and I couldn't disagree with him.
It's not like awful shit hasn't happened all throughout history, its just the way that entire time period played out in an almost supernatural way, like some unseen force was working behind the scenes to ensure all of this unlikely shit just happened to align perfectly in order for some of the absolute worst people in modern history to all come into power, and the fact that they all existed on the planet at the same time.
There will never be an author who could make up a story as horrifying as that time period
