She didn't even use half of their abilities to optimal (her very first game, what can ya do?), so it's tough to judge. I can say that a Nightfiend used right can lock down a lot of the field just on their lonesome.

Made a bad purchase today. Ended up spending £91 on 96 minis I've wanted for a while. Thing is, I know they'll not get any tabletop use. On reflection, I should've spent wiser like getting a Spearhead, waited for one of my most wanted kits to turn up in stock, or buy something I might actually use.

Here's the problem, and how it ties into 40k. A friend that is pretty much my only 40k buddy, has quit 40k ...again. The reason? His friends keep getting hyped for new thing, buying a lot of minis, losing interest somewhere along the way, then getting excited for new thing. So he keeps buying into GW then it never sees the tabletop.
I don't know if I'm included in that because I keep trying to get him to the table, but he's always busy with work, and for games like K47 and 40k, he refuses to build a list. One Hour Skirmish Wargames, Spearhead, and Gaslands get some play, but that's because there's no real list building. You can, but since he keeps not building a list, we play the default set and be happy. That's why I'm hoping Combat Patrol stays around, albeit with a massive revamp, in 11th.
Also, if anyone has any ideas for what I should build a unit of demons as to proxy, I'd like to hear it. They're fantasy, but supposedly kitbash well with sci-fi weapons.
I can't help but interpret your typo as "midrat grinder" and it makes even more sense that way. Turning the bodies of the fallen into valuable corpse starch is how the IoM rolls.

Invite him over for a 500 point game on a small board. He can bring more, just mix and match models up to the point limit and play quick games. If you cant host, pick them up and take them to the store.
I know the kind of person they are, you basically have to do 99% of the work for them. You almost have to pester them to paint their models. Its why I am printing 4x KT boards with terrain so I can invite mates over to play. Theres no excuse when the works done for them. Also, clearly ADHD.
Fun fact, 1x KT board is for KT. 2x KT boards is for boarding action and 4x KT boards (arranged 2x2, obviously) is for 2k games. GW made scaling it up easy.

Those guys could be abhuman cultists or traitor guard easily. I know that rules for all cultist or traitor guard armies were shoah-ed but if you give them guns then you could easily whip up a small traitor guard auxiliary for some chaos marines. The Stargrave bits should work without issue since its the same company but maybe the WGA shit will fit too.
In Wolftime a Custodes talks to a noble who was sad about not being given to them as a baby, the custodian says something along the lines of "you are lucky, otherwise you would lose everything that makes you human."
But then, pretty much every custode pov shows they aren't really any different from normal humans besides their inability to act against the Emperor (they can disagree with him)
I guess writers can't decide on how inhuman they are supposed to be.

Are there some within these ranks who are/were completely fucked in one way or another, and were only human in form? Absolutely. Was that all of them? Not a chance, otherwise I don't think Big E would have gotten half as far as he did.
And for the Thunder Warriors particularly, based on characters like Arik, Ushotan and Ghota, I like to think the "inhuman" thing was a lot more of a cope than it already is. They were brutal and rough, but no more than a chapter like the fucking Minotaurs or any of the sketchier Blood Angel offshoots. Were the Thunder Warriors really so awful compared to the Night Lords, Death Guard or what the War Hounds became after Angron? I don't think so.

Depends on which one, when it is, who is writing them, and what they're doing.
Diocletian(30k custodian written by a few different people) is self-aware of his... silly-ness at times, to the point of it making him insecure about himself compared to the other custodians and even wondering why the emperor made him that way. He's also the same custodian that when Guilliman finally shows back up on Terra and says something he doesn't like, sits and seethes "wishing a motherfucker would" fantasizing about the custodians and sisters in the room taking out Guilliman.
Amon(not even going to try and spell his last time)(30k) gets written like a robot in the siege of terra while having to "babysit" Basilio Fo.
Ra Endymion(30k) has a personality, but when the emperor commands him to "run Ra, run" like he's Forrest Gump, he just does it as ordered(he had a reason, it wasn't simply because the emperor was being an asshole, the emperor almost lost a fight vs a demon and Ra had it)
Colquan(40k) in the Dark Imperium books gets written like a fucking robot who thinks it's his absolute duty to be able to kill Guilliman "if necessary" and isn't capable of anything else. In the Dawn of Fire books Colquan is written more like an unwilling bodyguard, but actually has something resembling a personality on the occasion he's brought up.
Valerian(40k) gets written like a spoiled sheltered brat, especially with regard to the sister he ends up having to work with mostly from her perspective(he was spoiled and sheltered, but he's not an asshole and is genuinely trying to have something resembling normal conversations at times). It's just that apparently he's sat around writing poetry all day when not training or something so compared to a pariah having to exist and be hunted down has certainly had a good life.
Navradaran(jesus fucking christ some of these names)(40k) gets written as a buddy of Valerian, so much so if they weren't custodians you'd think they were drinking buddies. Meanwhile in The Dark city when he's working with the inquisitor, he's treated entirely like the personality of a robot, with the inquisitor about shitting himself when interacting with him a couple of times and isn't even capable of "hello". And both of these depictions were the same author.
And she wasn't even the self-insert "I can fix him" character that Vader immediately killed. She's an even more obnoxious self-insert girlboss written by this soy faggot back in 2015 as part of Disney's initial attempt to do something with Star Wars in comics outside of the main movies.

Which is why I never got why some fans go "(Faction X) doesn't have books because they are inhuman and people won't relate."
If Guilliman, a super duper guy who can process information on the nanosecond scale, can be relatable, any faction can.
The average Eldar or Necron isn't written any less human than the average guardsman.
I finally had a bit of time to get back to painting and was able to do up the obliterators and mutilators. I think the new mutilators kit is definitely a bit more boring as a painter than the obliterators, but I think that will work better for newer painters. Just greatful to have the oblits done as I've been looking at them unpainted for years now.
Found someone to split the new Armageddon box with, though he unfortunately wants the Astartes, so I'm playing Orks, I guess. Getting a sick deal on it, though, I don't care for the books or anything else in it besides the unit cards and models, so we're splitting the price 60-40. The Store we're buying from already does 15% off GW products because they know GW overcharges, so I'm getting everything for about $120 after tax.

im not exactly even cautiously optimistic but its going to be interesting if it releases a complete shitshow or in an acceptable state. It is funny how they keep making Chaos the DLC faction, i think many would've traded the Eldar for CSM, but i suppose they're the other token alien faction other than orks, and CSMs are only slightly less different from SMs than the guard is (there are huge differences in the grand scheme of things, but they're both Power Armored retards)
Even if it's a playable bug free game, it'll still be a DLC dumpster fire where you may just end up waiting years for your faction to be included, and hope they don't break something in the game along the way.
