I know nearly nothing about Undertale/Deltarune other than that Toby was inspired by Touhou

Is it worth playing in the gigantic 2026? Be honest tbh, I know the fandom for this game is almost cultlike so I assume there's a good reason for that

The only silver lining I can think of is that the chapter is getting near universally panned. The general consensus is that it was a huge disappointment, the nicest thing anyone can think to say about it is "Yeah the story sucks but at least the gameplay was cool," and hell must have frozen over because I've seen multiple normie fans come out and complain about how forced and sloppy Suselle felt. The carefully-constructed mythos of Toby Fox being this indelible irreplaceable auteur who has had everything meticulously planned out for years has been shattered.
I believe cracks were starting to form after Chapter 2, especially during the "deflowering" incident. The backlash got so bad they patched it with a shattering glass effect, because Toby played himself catering to hypersensitive idiots who think teenagers playing with pronouns is peak writing.

You should try Undertale to see if you like that first because Deltarune is an expansion of that. It's fun, and I think something is lost if you play it after we get all the answers.

The fandom and the speculation is the best part, I'm a theory fag and I just can't help it, when the game throws me a mystery, I get invested. Even if it's just vague lines upon vague lines. Toby can cook up good stuff when he is shocked in the balls every time he goes into faggotry territory.

It's one of those things that people will tell you about afterwards and they'll say "you had to be there" because you kinda have to since there are mysteries and mini-ARGs floating around. Schizo-theoring is fun for me, at least.

I find it funny that the Internet made a fuzz about the ring scene but everyone seems to universally like the scene where two teenagers commit an "apparent" double suicide.

UNDERTALE is a very flawed game with some good shit in it that may or may not make it worth your while.
DELTARUNE is that same flawed game on steroids ...and it's not even finished yet.

Undertale is actually finished, so give that a shot if you really want to. Otherwise save your time and money.
Undertale has some admittedly really good music, Waterfall especially has to be among my favorites. I recommend trying to go completely blind if you can.

Undyne still stuck in the evil ass rape dungeon for 2 chapters now, will toby shoot for 3?
Well considering the use of the word "Sacrifice" and what that usually entails, there's a pretty high chance she's fucking dead at this point.
Which also they still haven't explained that either, is some weird ass cult shit going on in the background too? Too bad, Toby won't tell you.

I call it now, if the game does finally explain itself it's gonna be a lightning round of lore dumps the next two chapters. Hilariously would be likely accidentally a funny mirror to Undertale just lore dumping all the Asriel shit on you right near the end instead of revealing it organically. The more things change, the more they stay the same. :story:

Undertale might be a bit outdated now, but I think it's still worth it to play. Especially before touching Deltarune.

At this point I am starting to wonder what the appeal of Deltarune would be without Undertale. I had this same criticism of DR in the early chapters, like my love for UT was carrying my investment. This chapter is making me wonder if any of the plot payoffs this far have been worth the wait. That's what happens when you are waiting chapter for chapter, sure, but the game is made with cliffhangers in mind, so it's not like it's a matter of "the GAYme isnt finished yet!!!"

I predict chapter 6 secret boss fight will be so sorry.

It's amazing that I'm feeling what others likely felt with Chapter 3. But in defense of that chapter, it felt like it was designed to be filler in a natural feeling way. Like you're just chilling with your bros and it moves the characters forward in a meaningful way since Kris, Susie, and Ralsei bounce off each other really well. It brought back memories of playing Cars on the GameCube with my brother late into the dead of night and just enjoying his company. Sure, the game isn't the most spectacular, but we had a good time playing it just like how the trio did with Tenna's show. And it helps that Kris is fully involved the entire time so we never truly feel left out. It's unironically really good at capturing the atmosphere it was aiming for and that made it more forgivable despite being more of a slog on repeat.

I don't get that sensation at ALL from Chapter 5.

I've only played UT and Chapter 1 of DR

UT is a flawed game carried mostly by it's soundtrack, although I do enjoy some of the narrative. I cannot deny it has SOUL and obviously there's gotta be something quality about if it has this rabid of a fan base a decade later.

DR is Toby's magnum opus made from a fever dream he had. it's meant to be played with knowledge of UT given the connections between the two. Unfortunately, what was once a promising darker follow up to UT has only gotten worse and indulged in more and more faggotry. All I can say is, I think it will end up being Toby's "Megalopolis".

In short, I'd say yes/maybe for UT, proceed with caution for DR.

I will say a few things in defense of chapter 5.
Ralsei becoming more confident and learning to stick up for himself a little bit was nice, even if it wasn't in the most interesting way. And I don't think it's necessarily all that bad that the chapter itself moved the plot forward very little, because we found another shelter code. It's not all that unusual for games with a maguffin plot to have a more self contained story as long as it ends with the heroes getting the maguffin, which we did. I just think it's more unbearable here because the payoff to getting all the maguffins is probably still years off. I can't defend Asgore vagueposting about what he did though. If there was ever a time to give us details it was then and there.

At the risk of sounding controversial, one of the highlights of this chapter was Green, she stole every scene she's in and is an incredibly endearing and adorable character.
Green and Aqua were the only overall successes of the flower characters in my opinion (and even Green had to get the they/them treatment). Seth was okay but Orange completely failed to connect with me at all and Yellow and Blue are just failures that should've been scrapped. I only said goodbye to Aqua and Green before trying to proceed with the ending and got momentarily irritated when the game made me go back and indulge the rest.

I figured out a way the Japanese theming could of been justified. Just use Kudzu. Kudzu is a Eastern vine that smothers all other plant life and structures. It was introduced to the Americas in the 1800s from Japan, and has since has been a pest that is taking over actual native plants in the Americas. Have it be that from the beginning, Asgore has Kudzu growing over his shop, and as each chapter goes on, it gets longer and longer. Kudzu can grow up to a foot a day, so by the time Chapter 5 rolls around, it's almost fully covering the store. Have some Asgore say some lines about how he's too lazy or likes it too much to actually cut it down. Have it be that the Kudzu on the outside of Asgore's shop gave the Dark World the Japanese theme. Kudzu is so overpowering it just straight up changed how the shop should of looked.

Impossible, Toby wants to suck jap micropeen, representing their culture with an invasive weed that chokes the life out of places would never fly for him.

On Twitter raped individuals are glazing the really good chapter 5.

Chapter 3 has much better pacing when you combine it with the sword route. If you miss the sword route it feels like a slog despite being shorter. However I am a chapter 3 lover so I'm bias.
Chapter 5 has no rewards besides pink coins for exploring in both the light and dark world while 3 has the entire sword route plus the gumball Easter egg.

Chapter 5 slander no BONUS ZONE:

I'm just going to leave this here

Apparently it's even colloquially called the "sunset flag".

Flowey's dialogue when he runs out of voiceclips is clearly a nod to Knuckle Sandwich; a dogshit game that starts with an interesting premise and spends the rest of the runtime backing away from it and doing nothing in particular.
The creator of KS is even on the DELTARUNE team.

We both know Toby's too sissy for that. What in God's name could Kris have done that he'd be willing to kill his dad to fix

I have noticed that a lot of the "Zomg this is the best chapter yet!" posters aren't able to really articulate why they feel that way beyond "I liked it therefore it's peak."

The people who think it's shit have entire lists of issues, story, pacing, writing and character-wise.
That's because they're either actual children or more likely manchildren who are addicted to twitter and think "it has gay in it so I love it and it's automatically good and if you say otherwise you're HECKIN HOMOPHOBIC TRANSPHOBIC BIGOT" instead of having a functional prefrontal cortex and realizing you can overall like something, and because you like that something, point out its massive fucking flaws for the better.
