Anyone who's ever felt an affinity for computing in general, and coding in particular, has felt some attraction to the underlying promises it represents. The autonomy and empowerment that comes with having a powerful microprocessor under your personal direction; the opportunity to experience the beauty of order by mastering a complex system, and the beauty of abstraction by interfacing with it; the ability to order one's own little corner of the world by ordering one's thoughts.
Whatever demons Terry Davis faced in his life, he always embodied a pure and sincere love for the best the computing revolution had to offer, and I think that's ultimately why he had such personal magnetism. He was a sort of Don Quixote of the information age.

Watching this talented, troubled, sui generis figure slip through the cracks of society was a tragedy, simply put.

Rest in peace, Terry.

This may be unrelated, but he posted his last video on August 11th. That night at 9pm a man in his late 40s was hit and killed by a train in The Dalles (where he was living).

The article was posted on August 13th and says:

A man in his late 40s was killed when he was struck by a train Saturday night just after 9 p.m. in the area of First and Terminal streets, according to The Dalles Police Department.

It is the third such fatality since last December, and the fourth since 2014.

The man’s name was not being released pending notification of next of kin, said The Dalles Police Capt. Jamie Carrico. It appears he is from out of town, he said.

There were no signs as of now that the man was intoxicated, and witnesses “saw him straddle the rail” Carrico said. At least one person saw the crash happen, he said. The trains also have video that would show the crash, Carrico said.

Really hope this isn't real... Been following Terry for years, he was truly a soldier of God. I enjoyed watching his videos, his child-like innocence, respected the hell out of his knowledge and talent.

The recent interview he did with those younger programmers who bought him food really gave me hope that he'd get the help he needed, if not from the government or family then from his fans. I logged onto Kiwi Farms this morning expecting some laughs, not this huge punch to the feels.

Words can't really surmise how sad this one is.

Terry was a bonafide saint of the 20th century. There are years and years of testament to his glory, and the good he did for the people, in God's name, to great ridicule and scorn for his deteriorating mental state; something that was simply out of his control. Nobody will write a book about Terry, but we have the archives and his OS. He gave us his book in his code, his websites, and his videos. Most importantly, he gave us a Temple.
