I've seen a second family member die in an accident soon after the death of a parent or child quite a few times. I suspect they get so distracted by their grief that they're not paying attention as much as they would normally.

I wonder if the sister's reference to Terry continuing his journey "on his terms" meant he didn't go home when his mother died.
