I've been playing TF2 since June of 2011 when Meet the Medic came out and the game went free to play. I can confidently say that the Meet your Match update back in 2016 or so was egregiously destructive towards the critical community aspect of the game. It was a huge dopamine hit to hit quick play and land in a lively community server. Using the old server browser to find more obscure modded servers with niche communities felt like joining an exclusive club. The first ever community server I joined was a trade server on the trade_casino map. When was the last time you saw that? Or the original trade_plaza? Or the countless versions of trade_minecraft?
I frequented LazyPurple's silly server back when there was only 1, then I became a regular on silly server #2 came out since #1 was always full. I have very fond memories of someone mic-spamming Queen while I was rocket-jumping around the Mario Kart map with 23 other players. I remember hanging out on surf maps. I remember death run. I remember balloon race. I remember the original voice actor for VS Saxton Hale. I remember Meet the Pyro. I remember Jungle Inferno. I was there for all of it, and it was grand.
I played for hours after school with my friends on Skype (before Discord, kids) as well and getting one guy in the group super salty. I miss those days dearly. I don't think I'd want to go back to those times, but I certainly want what I had to be available to the new players now. The community and aspect of adventure/exploring the unknown world of servers was a huge draw to TF2. Without that being easily accessible or advertised, what is the game now aside from a husk? When I play now, I sometimes get hits of what I used to feel 15 years ago. We don't know how good we have it until "it" is gone.
