They're also finally killing the digital stores for the PS3 and vita (you'll still be able to download already purchased games).
Physical disks haven't contained the playable game for almost a decade now. Disks have already been reduced to glorified game keys that prompt your system to download the other 90% of the game before you can play anything.
While that's true, the disc still functions as something you actually own and can trade, loan, sell, purchase somewhere that isn't Sony's dogshit store, etc..

The PS3 is still the most popular console in Latin America and the poorer parts of Aisa and Eastern Europe.

They're cutting off a fuck ton of people.

Sony's official stance is no poorfags allowed.

I don't see the point of owning a console at this point tbh

Physical games weren't for me, but I could understand why a lot of people preferred them and they had a huge draw for the enthusiast/collector market. But without that, you're basically just playing on a shitty PC with bad VRR support and overpriced games.

The Xbox One reveal from way back in the day wasn't a monster, it was ahead of the curve.

Might as well be confirmation that the ps6 will be digital only. I doubt they make a dedicated ps6 disc drive for a system releasing in November 2027 when they're ending physical entirely in January 2028.

The gaming industry deserves everything and more that is happening to it.

I cannot emphasize enough how much of the lay-offs, closures, commercial failures, cancelled games, ... are well deserved for whatever the fuck we now call the Gaming Industry.

As Gaben has claimed: "piracy is almost always a service problem" and this rings more true than ever, if developers withhold the right to stop you from playing a game you purchased at their whim and believe they can adapt the rules to whatever they want, then everyone should have the right to call these developers niggerfaggots and pirate their games.

Total. Corpo. Death.

Will this actually change anything? From my understanding you have needed an internet connection to actually "install" games off the disc for a good while now. Game dumps also happen directly from the console.
Can someone more autistically into the PS5 preservation scene than me confirm/deny this?

You do, but the disk was still what allowed you to play it. You can buy/sell/trade the disk and play the game, even if 90% of the content was downloaded after inserting the disk.

No disk means you have no choice but to buy everything directly from Sony for whatever they want to charge.

Oh shit they still have tradeable disks? For now, anyway. I thought they got rid of that years ago.

There are a lot of games that work offline but have online only DLC too so these people will be able to access the games themselves but lose all the DLC they bought which is shitty.

Literally no reason not to softmod it at this point. Sony doesn't even give a shit you can play online with pirated games and they don't even ban you unless you use cheats.

Feel free to rainbow react this but I'm hoping (coping) that they're testing the waters and will do a 180 once player backlash gets bad enough. Even if this is true this doesn't bode well because that just means they're waiting for a time where they can get it over with.

I feel like physical games haven't really been a thing for a while outside of maybe the Switch. I buy most of my new games on Steam and the last physical game I bought was just a box with a download code.

I'm just waiting the a second game crash at this point. It's more likely now than ever.
The crash is happening right now, it's just more of a domino effect than a nuclear meltdown.

The consoles will definitely fail. All the gaming studios are crashing so most of Sony's Playstation sales are going to come from people wanting to play the new Madden.
