But it didn't. Even before Steam physical PC games always retailed for cheaper than console games in the same stores, and they must have been more expensive to produce because they came in giant, custom-printed boxes often filled with cool bonuses like cloth maps, lore books and those bizarre DRM tools like the pirate face maker for Monkey Island. The only console games I remember doing anything remotely close to that was the paper maps you got with the PS2 GTA games.It made sense with the data we had at the time.
Console games cost more because enough console gamers are willing to pay the price, same reason Microsoft (and eventually Sony and Nintendo) get away with charging for online multiplayer and why no console store does deep discounts like Steam (at least not on games anyone would actually want).
