It's been mentioned thousands of times over but Sony plays games with their console sales and that's especially the case with the PS5, as they've claimed that PS4s sold during this period, Playstation VR and other peripherals, and even PS5s that are brought in for service are classified as PS5s sold, and they state that the shipped that amount, not sold, so there's a large amount that are just sitting in storagehouses just rotting away.
Fair enough, since we are mostly depended on what the console manufactures tell us they are free to make their numbers look better on financial reports. But Nintendo also reports its hardware as sell-in, and we haven't had official Microsoft data for years now since they stopped reporting it entirely. So the same argument can be made against them too and then all hardware numbers are useless too us.
For the first one I'm a little pessimistic, while the backlash has been spectacular, it's most likely an extremely vocal minority. And I was shocked to see goycattle genuinely defend this. We saw this with the GTA VI news with gun and ball gamers "broke ass niggas get yo money up"
For the second point they might try and shill cloud gaming but I genuinely see no hype for it. Like no one seems interested in it, even digital only shills.
I'm incredibly pessimistic. Goycattle will not care because they either lack the ability to think long term or if they can think long term believe "There is no way the Nips would just yeet my games out of my library and make me buy them all over again! That would hurt their business!". They did it with the DS by keeping the PS2 on the market as long as they possibly could, and with the Switch they've basically claimed that they've sold every PS2 that they ever made somehow to keep the Switch from surpassing it. So it's not that much of a stretch to say that Sony is also playing games with the PS5s numbers to make it look much more of a success than it actually is.

It is certainly strange how Sony kept changing the numbers, so the competitor doesn't win this made up contest. But pretending like Nintendo weren't as likely to have pulled the same shit is strange especially with the DS, Wii and Switch. It's not that obvious with those numbers ? They didn't tamper with the sell-in stats out of the goodness of their hearts ? Either both are guilty or neither one did it.
I'm baffled they're even bothering to make another console, the rest of Sony (and DEI bucks) must be carrying the gaming division hard because any other company would've been six feet under at this point.

Updating numbers as more data comes in is pretty normal, and Sony didn't have final tallies from all territories for a long time due to the lifespan of the PS2 in developing markets and large shipped supply in the last years of production.
Sony doesn't report units shipped, so they have to rely on inventory reporting to find out what was sold through. The last markets the PS2 was actively sold in were Africa and South Asia, so expecting quick numbers from those places is just plain dumb.

It is hilarious how many people think that PlayStation isn't making money, when they are having their most profitable generation so far. A lot of it is typical gamer ignorance and the mentality of "I didn't like this, so nobody bought it!" wish casting and the absurd blindspot some people have regarding the fact that 3rd-party game sales are 90% of a platform-holder's income unless they are total fuckups about cultivating relationships like Nintendo has been a few generations.

The difference is that once Nintendo takes its consoles off the market they stick with those numbers, whereas Sony has constantly played with the PS2's numbers long after it was taken off the market. for the longest time Sony claimed they sold 140 million PS2s, then all of a sudden the Switch catches up on that number and every time Sony claims they just magically find 5 million PS2s that were sold out of thin air. I'm not denying that the PS2 wasn't a massive success but it's pretty obvious that having the most successful console of all time is something that Sony is dedicated to keep having.
