When I pursued my higher education students sperged out about politics, getting high and fucking, sport or all of the above - this was accepted as being the ordinary state of affairs, not something to be censured. When did this change?

My being non-US and having completed my degree 20 years ago may have something to do with this.

This was a massive advantage for him since very few people actually cared enough to pay attention to his show or his antics IRL, most people just knew him for occasionally seeing a a news article calling him a nazi and naturally that would get dismissed (because journalism).

Well, it was more than that. He attended Charlottesville, and once that got out and people looked more into him and found all his racist internet spergery, he was persona non grata on campus. Soon after that Nick dropped out and moved back to Chicago. That's also what started his seething hatred of Richard Spencer and the alt-right, because he blamed them for Charlottesville and the subsequent collapse of his social life and college aspirations.
