they removed the bottom rated charts :(
Brad Taste's career is even more over now.

Ah, the classic "make a site worse" updates. What was the given reason?
sharifi.jpg
Sounds a lot like YouTube removing dislikes except in this case I'm not aware that there was any "drama" involving these charts. It's a little sad, I got a few funny discoveries out of them.

The bottom charts by genre were really useful. Like if you did black metal, you'd get some incredible bad bedroom black metal trash, and if you searched power metal you got this album recorded on a tin can by some Colombians where they couldn't even keep their instruments in time with each other. Really bizarre shit, but I guess "muh drama" is reason to remove it because janny can't do his job.

This thing of deleting the bottom charts feels like trying to hide things that disagree with the politics of the site, since lots of releases that were in the bottom charts were right wing stuff. There's lot of censorship on the site btw like how they do with disable comments on releases with nazi content and in polemic media.

The thing I hate the most about RYM's trannies is that they try to revive aesthetics without any effort into what made it good in the first place. This is especially apparent in neo-Y2K and Frutiger Aero shit zoomers make, who seem to take the lowest amount of effort possible and have little to no design consistency. I'm surprise they don't have their own thread but Dismiss Yourself is a tranny rap and breakcore label known for this garbage and definitely popularized the revival of the aesthetic to a degree, especially on RYM.
Sticki, the owner of the label, would send his discord of terminally online RYM users to storm the ratings on releases they put out or wanted to bring exposure. The result? Obnoxious tranny and nig infused garbage flooding the charts for old electronic genres (namely genres like trance, freeform hardcore, and other less in the zeitgeist genres) and eventually their albums overtook the classics in the chart despite being completely subpar to them in every way and just being low effort, bitcrushed entry shit. Let's take a listen to some of the notorious garbage that RYM uncritically praised after being shilled to them by Sticki
Exhibit A: a group known as Reptilian Club Boyz who make shitty underground rap but apparently so based/cool because it's bitcrushed to an annoying degree and uses anime samples (so y2k and fuckin retro bro) that Sticki uploaded to Dismiss Yourself and later deleted because one of the nigs was discovered to be a rapist pedophile (Huge shocker I know)
Exhibit B: Another shitty bitcrushed release shilled by Sticki and his army of faggots that was later deleted because (You'll never believe this) the artist was a rapist pedophile. Unforunately, a lot of the evidence is lost to time considering it was mostly spread on discord but from what I remember this "artist" was a rapist and also abused animals too. So we got fur control cameo here as well.
Exhibit C: Yet another pedophile (notice a pattern here?) who's work was uploaded to Dismiss Yourself and later deleted once new discoveries were made. Not only a pedophile, but a nazi tranny pedophile who drinks cough syrup all day and thinks they are god. Also if you think the music in this video is good, don't worry its heavily lifted from a sample and this artist really only added drums. Forunately for us, the evidence still exists outside the 'cord via a gracious lengthy expose document and a youtube video that covers it in detail.

Exhibit D: Another tranny freak (who later became a "system"/DID larper when being a tranny didn't get them enough attention) who makes shitty bitcrushed cloud rap made to appeal to retarded zoomers who was quite prolific on RYM as being an annoying "ero-guro" pedophile named Ollalie. Their name actually stems from this (aERO-GROS M, with the M meaning manga). This dumbfuck even was an artist on pixiv and uploaded his disgusting fetish shit to there. Unforunately for him, a dismiss yourself discord user found out and called him out for being a freak and then he DFE and since the call out was again, only on discord to cover Sticki's ass for giving these freaks a platform, people think Ollalie/Dede left because muh trauma or some dumb shit.

You get the picture, and there's probably more pedophiles under the rug in this rabbithole but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head. All are obsessed with bitcrushed cloud rap, all are obsessed with shitty breakcore made in 5 minutes. Unforunately much of what is the most damning things about them are on their discord, which every invite appears to be broken and not working. I left their discord eons ago so all I really got is ancedotal shit, but its worth looking into.

If you want a release that is still up on the channel from a tranny freak to really illustrate the point that these fags will literally take any 2000s aesthetic and ruin it, here you go:

The new genre voting system on RYM is among the most autistic things I have ever encountered on a website. They replaced a simple "yes/no" system with rating 1 star, 2 star, or 3 star depending on just how much it fits the genre, or voting ø if it doesn't at all. I mean christ look at this overdesigned shit.
1000008272.jpg

And I think the "warning" has ballooned in size too.
1000008271.jpg

Come to think of it, that wouldn't surprise me. I guess I just remembered back when the bottom charts was mostly trash like Soulja Boy and Crazy Frog or legendarily bad albums like Emerson Lake and Palmer's Love Beach. Guess zoomers spamming /pol/ shitposts in audio form would logically replace that (the zoomers spamming no effort twans wights uwu of course are only on the top charts).

It's a good thing they don't have comment boxes for the NSBM albums IMO. Why would anyone want to read nothing but "REEEEE FUCK NAZIS" and "Fuck Nazis but I like this" over and over again?

The amount of adult users on RYM who claim to be part of a system is so strange to me. I've not seen any other online space with such a high concentration of them. I swear to god it's every time I click a random profile in any comment section.

It makes one wonder how long will it be until the RYM users of today will now flock over to AOTY. I ponder this since I have not used the site in almost four years now.

Sorry for the necro and longpost but I have a lot to add here.
I'm surprised there aren't more posts here considering how lulzworthy RYM is. I expected this thread to have probably dozens of pages by now. Was it made too late?
I was on the site for a few years, and I've been banned a couple of times.

This is a review of a Banksy documentary, by the way. Just in case this wasn't amazing enough. This is actually way longer, but I really don't feel like screenshotting all of it, you can read the rest of it here. I'd also just like to bring attention to this person's profile, it really is something:

One of my very favorite users on the site is m_crowley, who may seem like your average dime-a-dozen RYM genderspecial furry... which yeah, they kind of are, but they are utterly and neurotically obsessed with "slacker rock." Why? Because the name of that genre used to be "lo-fi indie" until someone changed it. This is, assumedly, a fully grown adult with so few real problems in life that they get mad about the name of a genre on a music cataloging website 0.1% of the population uses...
1725579227078.png

m_crowley is also a bit of a critic, one might say. An aesthetician. With over 306 review to boot. Sure, most of it is either generic solipsistic drivel or stuff that doesn't even count as reviews at fucking all (hey don't they have a rule or two about that?)- but hey, it's hundreds of reviews! The average RYM user is obsessed with numbers- it's foundational to the site.
His pièce de ré·sis·tance is probably his review of Car Seat Headrest's "Twin Fantasy." Now, imagine what you'd expect a music review to look like. Maybe a short summary of the band's history up to that point, a description of the music, and how good the reviewer thinks of it. Throw that out the window. Instead, you get a memoir about being a suicidal depressed furry in a polycule that got into music. Just read it:

He also made the amazing list "Top 10 Songs With Horrible Slurs In Them", which consists of him whining about songs that use no-no words and talking about how he hates white people:

Two other exceptional individuals that actually were quite influential to the site's culture are TheHorbgorbler and epithalamion/telephone_junkie.
Epithalamion is a brown failson that transitioned (as failsons do) and made dime a dozen shitty RYM reviews. He later left the site because he posted a review about how Kanye West "is ashamed to be black." Wow I can't believe people got mad at that. He's also 35 years old, so if you want a reminder of how bad things can REALLY get, here you go.

The full Kanye West review:
"Anyway, Kanye loves white people more than he loves North. Kanye’s senior yearbook quote was “my name is Toby.” I hope Donda asks him to change both album titles and never talk to her again. I hope the ignominy and loneliness and brokenness never, ever leave him. Kanye West’s brain is a klan robe. No matter how many times he goose-steps to the bank, his money will never buy him a spirit worth redeeming. Let the coldness have him. Flesh and blood want nothing whatsoever to do with him. Mind wants nothing to do with him. He’s the literalization of Dave Chappelle’s black man in the KKK. Nobody will ever want him again. His purchased friends will rob him and leave him alone with the nothing he is. His broken tongue is incapable of truth. Amazon Prime will only let him watch Police Academy movies. He ruined everything he’s ever been. I’m already forgetting “All Falls Down” and “Monster” and “New Slaves.” He no longer is. There is no Kanye.

Bye Kanye

(Oh, and y’all’s leaping to whitewash me as soon as I say something even mildly untoward is by no means surprising– like, it’s literally every day as a POC on the internet, but never mind. 99% of you are part of the problem, and you’re simply too stupid and too weak to change that. And so people like me are forced to do all of the thinking and all of the actual work on your behalf, WHILE you treat me like shit for it. And when I say that “Uncle Tom” isn’t a racial slur, I mean that nobody considers it a racial slur– it’s simply a term for describing a certain type of disposition or behavior. It would be like calling “chair” or “blueberry” or “tuba” a curse word. It’s literal nonsense that you shutins tell yourselves and believe for the sake of form, knowing absolutely nothing about the meaning or significance of what you’re saying, having neither the strength nor the brains nor the goodwill to understand. You are the chattering classes of white supremacy.

Oh & yeah I’m checking the comment box. Wouldn’t you? This shit’s important to me. But I’m also forum banned and therefore comment box banned, and also…. idk. Maybe it’s another case of “wow, I can’t believe she’s actually so eager to die on this hill,” but I’m just so sick of all the tenuousness, all the trepidation, all the refusal to acknowledge what’s quite blatantly there in front of us, and all out of a kind of unsolicited politeness. Kanye West is an Uncle Tom. What else is he? What arbitrary and meaningless caprice is keeping you from fitting the word to the meaning, other than your own uninformed hesitancy? The truth is completely harmless, even if the telling of it is abrasive. Just let reality hurt for a moment. Let the villain have his full due, and don’t deny Kanye the title he’s worked so hard to earn.

But if nothing else, stop pretending to understand me. God hasn’t been that kind to most of you. But it comes down to this: racism is something I actually have to deal with in the regular course of my life, and so I’m not kind to enablers of racism, especially when they’re old enough to know better and rich enough to be able to make a difference. Either you can respect that or white supremacy is working for your benefit. Anyway, I’m disappointed in all of you.

And if you’re worried about Kanye’s feelings, let me assure you that he will literally never read a word of this review, nor would he pay it much mind if he did. I’m punching up, you know? Way, way up. Do you have any idea how far up I’m punching right now? Kanye West is a very rich Nazi. He’s fine, I promise you. I can’t believe I need to clarify this, but I am literally incapable of doing any amount of harm to Kanye West, one of the richest and most famous people who ever lived, nor would I want to hurt him if I could. Kanye West is so, so completely safe from anything you or I might say about him. If the effort of not caring were to be too much for him, he could pay someone to do the not caring for him. Kanye West, the beloved popular entertainer, and worldwide celebrity, is a rich, comfortable, powerful man. With the change in his pocket, Kanye West could probably have me killed if he wanted to. Meanwhile, I work graveyard shifts so I can make rent. Permit me my moment of intersectional bitterness. Goliath is Goliath is Goliath is Goliath. Don’t worry about Kanye West.)

TheHorbgorbler is pretty similar to telephone_junkie, except they have an obsession with obscure genres like spiritual jazz and musique concrete and avant-garde prog rock because they have an insatiable need for attention. Because he hates himself (and therefore all men,) he's obsessed with "feminine" music like female-fronted or "sensitive male" indie rock and pop music. He later became obsessed with shitty modern pop music to try to be "anti-rockist", which was pretty ahead of the curve considering how many people worship Charli XCX or Beyonce and hate AC/DC and Guns 'n Roses on RYM. Apparently, he fakerates and only listens to a few songs off of everything he rates, which is why he has tens of thousands of ratings. No archives of his reviews, sadly. He got banned from the site for celebrating the suicide of Chester Bennington, according to some accounts. Overall, a nice person. He also has an inactive Discogs. (archive)

A review of "Fun House" by The Stooges:
"I hate it because I hate men. No, I hate it because I hate white men. No, I hate it because I hate masculinity, period. This record does indeed have balls but when did those ever do anyone any good?

Iggy is so violently HETEROSEXUAL and MANLY he literally makes me sick a bit in the pit of my stomach. I literally am filled with intense loathing every time I see him or hear his cocksure macho man caterwauling. This shit is as bad as the Brainbombs or any power electronics you can name for sheer male supremacist wank fantasy material, I don't even know why I single out the Stooges because rock 'n' roll itself is built upon white male supremacy but the Stooges may actually be rock 'n' roll incarnate and therefore make themselves such a huge target for all of hatred of that shit I have inside. IT SWAGGERS. I can't hear the opening riff without being terrified about someone being beaten or raped: this IS incredibly visceral music, but as someone who knows (second-hand, thank god) the violence and evil inherent in the heart of Man it isn't some fun boozy thrill ride, it's repugnant and soul-hurting and deeply fucked. Maybe I'm projecting my own issues with masculinity (heaven knows I have them!) on this record in order to exorcise my hatred by crucifying it in print, but I guess the point here is, again, everyone praising this record as a monolith of abject misanthropic and implicit violence is totally 100% correct and if they ENJOY it for that reason, then more power to them but it seems a microcosm of everything I hate about literally everything, an unwholesome fascist putrescence that crept from the underbelly of the biggest beast the human race has ever had to face."

There is just far, far too much to discuss with this site. I haven't even gotten to the 4chan /rym/ threads yet- which were hives of e-stalking, flaming, poserdom, political bitching, forced memes, astroturfing, etc:

A conversation with some "titan" he posted in a thread:
1725582227965.png

A message he wrote to someone over a joke review:
"Hello,

I want to say this as nicely as possible. I have no intent to demean.

You really should consider unpublishing your review for Intimate Rituals.

It's not funny. At all.

At least unpublish and not delete. Sure, you can share that humor with your friends, but your review publicly on the page for the release looks disrespectful, like you took a shit on it.

I guess that's why they call you KingShit? And I don't know, I guess you'd love to disrespect it if you gave it 0.5 stars. But the turd in question reads to me as intended to embarrass those who like the music... while in itself being misguided and therefore more embarrassing to itself.

"Too deep"? Even if this were a joke, to find this review funny one would have to even vaguely relate to thinking in that manner.

A review negatively describes India Song as "no content and all style". It's right there on the Wikipedia page of India Song. My response to this is that the style is the content. The story is simple: a woman is not in love with her husband. The way it is told, however, is in a completely original cinematic language which is breathtaking and beautiful, particularly to those who take it as something to feel and admire as a sensual experience, rather than to someone who is trying to understand the semantic content of the story as if it has to be some "deep" philosophical exploration (? or whatever people mean when they use the word "deep" to talk about art...).

That's what I have to say about Intimate Rituals. The sound itself is breathtaking and beautiful and a joy for me to listen to. I also acknowledge that it's really out there and confrontational and basically sounds insane and horrifying (which some might perceive as only unpleasant and perhaps really obnoxious). And I like that sort of thing. And it does this in a new musical language, one which squeezes mystifying and unusual sounds out of a traditional instrument.

You don't expect beauty to come out in such an unusual way but it does, and it's all the more beautiful for it. This isn't far from the way Sunshine Has Blown plays in a new musical language, its warmth buried under howls of cold hallucinatory electronic noises that might confound someone else, might sound ugly to someone else.

There's nothing "deep" other than the multidimensionality inherent in the style of the music itself (it's ambiguously atonal, rich in a timbre which may be "pleasant" or "unpleasant" or both). There's no secret avant-club and there's certainly no intent to rate Intimate Rituals to appear a certain way to others.

People think people who rate Intimate Rituals 5 stars are deeper or trying to seem deeper? I'd sooner think you're deeper. "Paradoxical singularity"? "objective perception"? I have no idea what this means.

I'm not being sarcastic. I don't think you're stupid for not liking Intimate Rituals. You don't have to listen to music for a certain amount of time to enjoy Intimate Rituals. You are either the loony demented type that would enjoy Intimate Rituals, or be fascinated by it enough to relisten to it enough times that it'd grow on you more, or you are not.
"Rational ecstasy"... I'd never use that term. I mean, I do have an idea of what joy_circumcision was trying to say... that one would derive enjoyment from cerebral aspects in music ... but I don't think music like Antoine Beuger or whatever else he'd refer to as "rational ecstasy" is cerebral so much as it is an intuitive feeling and unique in its abstract formlessness. I don't mind when people don't like the type of music that I like but I do mind when people belittle and make false assumptions about the people who do.

Anyway, there are people on /mu/ (not sure if you're included) who have bitterly assumed that such things as avant-teens exist who rate music "for the image"...

Judging from all the bile and gossip and mockery on /mu/, and by the way they speak of AntiWarhol as if he's a god, if someone cared about image on RYM in such a way, it would make much more sense to deliberately avoid rating token "avant-teen" releases and instead look for music not rated by any certain users so as to seem like more of an independent "tastemaker".

I think any interest in RYM and rating music is totally nerdy. I don't think people are trying to be fashionable with their ratings...

You don't have to relisten to Intimate Rituals. You don't have to like Intimate Rituals... Just please don't go around disrespecting users that have done nothing to you. (I'm talking about how your Intimate Rituals review sarcastically implies that it's an Emperor's New Clothes type of thing, and how it implies that people would somehow think less of you for not liking the music, but also that I suspect you may or may not gossip on /mu/...)

Also, I don't know how much this applies to you but I hope you realize how bad it is to have the mindset that everything is a competition (like people on 4chan who think RYM is a competition). You aren't a loser for not liking certain music, and liking certain music or finding out about music before others doesn't make you better or worse. I'd have almost said that at least "obnoxious teenage SJWs" don't have that 4chanish everything-is-a-competition mindset, though in fact they do often take on an aggressive Oppression Olympics type of mindset which is indeed obnoxious."

I almost forgot about Princess_Misty. This is just blatant hypno-fetishism. Even worse is that this person was doing this since they were a minor! Where are the parents?!

I'd like to end this with a sobering response from AntiWarhol, a "titan" on RateYourMusic:
1725576426681.png

RYM is a website full of people who like the idea of writing about music, not music itself.

I just made an account here to comment that as someone who uses the site, and is somewhat involved there, the moderation is some of the worst I've seen. I've seen claims that some users are getting banned or permanently suspended just because a mod hates them in particular, or for seemingly minor reasons, which I don't want to be too specific about, but I can say that it seems mods will stretch the definitions of spam or abuse as they like, to an unreasonable degree. You can get your contributions removed. There are probably many other examples, but I don't know how to discuss it here without exposing myself. Reasons for bans are private, I wonder why? Plus any legitimate criticism of the moderation is basically ignored, or mods claim you are acting in bad faith, basically they will use some excuse, from what I've heard. That list of releases with closed comment boxes was removed somewhat recently. I also wonder why.

The absolute state of RYM. What does descriptor "non-binary vocalist" actually tell us about this album?
It's just retarded policing to enforce that the vocal descriptor is the same as an artist's gender identity.

It's the same thing with troons:

How'd they deal with Keith Caputo, the singer who trooned out for a decade and then stopped being a troon. Did a bunch of albums with "female vocalist" go back to being "male vocalist?"

The entire descriptors thing feels absolutely pointless and just pure autism. The idea sounded good when it was proposed since IIRC they said it was going to cover shit like concept albums, but it's just a dumping ground for random emotions that says absolutely nothing about the music. Like the majority of those descriptors could just as much apply to the average Burzum album. To me, that's when the site really jumped the shark so to speak.

All of the releases involving Caputo that have lots of ratings have vocals as "male vocalist" whereas all of the less rated releases have either "female vocalist" or no vocalist descriptor whatsoever. Some rym seething about Capulto:

The absolute state of RYM. What does descriptor "non-binary vocalist" actually tell us about this album?
It's just retarded policing to enforce that the vocal descriptor is the same as an artist's gender identity.

It's the same thing with troons:

I didn't even know that I was listening to a troon, and then I go to the RYM page and I see that it was actually a true and honest woman.
I had never heard of Jane Remover until I glanced at Wikipedia's "Did you know?" list for this morning. I am so proud of myself for clocking them as a tranny based on their name alone and the statement
  • ... that Jane Remover was inspired to create Census Designated after a self-described "near-death experience" traveling through a blizzard?

I clicked on their wiki and confirmed they were trans, but then had to search them on the farms because there was a mention of a "twin sister" and I have a morbid curiousity if its a case where twin brothers trooned out.

Rateyourmusic has now added Brony Music under "Scenes & Movements". 8/10 of the top albums on it's chart are albums by Vylet Pony.

Brony music is an Internet scene of music that aesthetically features, is derivative of, or is lyrically about My Little Pony. It originated in the 2010s when the fourth generation of My Little Pony was released by Hasbro, inspiring a cult fan base to create an enormous amount of fan work, especially music. Both original songs inspired by ponies and remixes or covers of the songs featured in the show are present in the scene. This scene is almost always based on the fourth generation, Friendship Is Magic, or its spinoff, Equestria Girls. The name for the scene comes from the term brony, a portmanteau of bro and pony, which means an adult fan of My Little Pony. These fans originated on 4chan, specifically the /mlp/ message board, where brony music was shared. Aesthetically, the scene features ponies, femininity, cutiemarks, bright colours and childish graphics.

The scene's roots are with the original soundtrack of the TV show, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic - Songs of Friendship and Magic, composed by Daniel Ingram, which was a blueprint for the fans to create remixes or covers. The fandom is unique in that its initial boom created thousands of songs in such a short amount of time. The music of this scene varies greatly, but it is usually Pop, Rock, Brostep, House or Eurobeat. The Living Tombstone, Alex S. and Eurobeat Brony were popular in the early brony community, making original dubstep and Eurobeat songs for the fandom, with "Discord (The Living Tombstone's Remix)" being one of the most popular brony songs. Artists such as SoGreatandPowerful and PinkiePieSwear were also heavily influential, focusing on more atmospheric brony music, such as Glitch Pop, and standardising the technique of chopped vocals. Glaze was another influential EDM artist whose songs such as "Rainbow Factory" and "Awoken," due to their popularity, are well-known outside of the fandom. A popular subset of brony music is dubtrot (also known as trotstep or ponystep), taking inspiration from 2010s EDM subgenres like brostep or Glitch Hop [EDM].

Publications such as Equestria Daily were an important part of the scene that aimed to highlight the best brony music via lists during the initial 2011-2013 craze. In 2015, they reported that thousands of musicians were creating brony songs and submitting it to their website every day. Many database websites existed during this time to host the music, such as pony.fm and the MLP Music Archive. Online radio stations like Ponyville FM were also set up to promote the music and help it reach a larger audience. Annual brony conventions, such as BronyCon, continued to be held and featured concert segments that allowed brony musicians to perform their music live. Generation 4 of My Little Pony officially ended in 2019, yet despite the decline in popularity, artists such as Vylet Pony continued to use the pony aesthetic with their music into the 2020s, though it lacked interaction with modern iterations of the scene.
