Phil Fish "leaving" is like CWC leaving the internet. How many times has it happened? Except I don't follow Phil Fish. He had that one chimpout like a year or two ago where he said Fez 2 is cancelled. He "left" game development and I promptly forgot about him. So when he quit again during the whole gamergate fiasco, it was like "Wut? He came back? When?"

I don't think this is the last we'll see of him. He'll crawl back without anyone really noticing until he has another meltdown that leaves everyone going lolwtf? Most game developers either charge for or otherwise monetize the entertainment they create. Phil Fish does it for free.

I'm pretty sure only Jonathan Blow would do that.
To Blowhard's credit, I don't remember him ever lashing out at fans. The worst thing he ever did (to my knowledge) was constantly talking about how "sophisticated" he is. He's worse than a sunglasses-wearing fedora-tipper, he's a monocle-wearing tophat-tipper.

Speaking of tophats, I always thought Fish is a little bit like Totalbiscuit: Basically competent at what they're supposed to be doing (as in Fez is kind of a decent game and TB seems to make clueful reviews), but for all that is good and holy, don't ask their opinions on anything and especially don't let them anywhere near social media or it will just end in tears. To me, both are less in lolcow category and more in "a guy with some serious issues" category.

What exactly has Totalbiscuit done that was awkward on social media? I've heard him allude to being a dick about some things in the past, but I haven't seen anything cringeworthy he's done recently. Especially not compared to someone like Phil Fish.

Mostly just massive Olympic-grade mental gymnastics. He's been flaunting his 150+ IQ and, for a very long time, been arguing semantics about whether his "WTF is" videos actually qualify as reviews or not (spoiler: no matter how hard he claims that they don't, YES, THEY DO). He has a giant fanbase that basically will rip you to shreds if you make the mistake of calling these videos "reviews", and when the GamerGate hit the shores, he's been especially careful not to call himself a journalist just so that the Journalist Ethics® don't apply to him personally, because making "first looks" at games on YouTube is totally different, guys. He has been releasing gigantic pseudo-intellectual rants on what exactly qualifies as "games", too, and being deliberately obtuse about things. Which is all a giant big shame, because if he didn't do any of this, I'd think he'd be a pretty damn good video game reviewer.

I don't see a problem with any of that, other than maybe the LOL IQ bit. There's no hard line between journalist and not a journalist, and he's closer to journalist than someone like Pewdiepie or Tobuscus, but not completely there. A review should cover the entire game, which "WTF is..." doesn't. He covers a buttload of games, and would only be able to do like one or two a week if they were proper reviews. His stance, as far as I can tell, is that ethical standards should depend on the type of videos being made, so someone making videos strictly for entertainment doesn't need to hold themselves to the same standards as someone being strictly informative. It all sounds very reasonable to me. Even if you disagree, it's not even on the same plane of reality as the stuff Phil Fish says. You might as well be comparing R Lee Ermey to Jace.

Agree with you there. On general level, TB is a much more pleasant person and I can totally watch most of his stuff as long as I stay the hell away from his Twitter and not watch any of the ginormous rants. I was just saying he has same type of problem as Fish, yet definitely not in the same magnitude. And like I said, I don't really think either of them are amusing enough to qualify as lolcows.

He still seems to be laying low, unlike that other game dev lolcow Derek Smart who just tweeted about us. Makes you wonder if Fish is glad he nuked his internet presence sometimes. Because "At least I'm not Derek Smart".

His new project is shitty VR muscle march but without the muscles or the fun.

I really don't get the idea behind the game, as in it's a VR game where you drop blocks through holes. It's basically a mobile worthy idea except it's VR. Like, I don't want to put on a VR headset just to play a shitty block drop game I could play on my android. What's the market he's targeting? oh right pretentious people with VR headsets.

Because Phil is an unimaginative fuck and unless he has somebody else's ideas to rip-off/steal he hasn't got shit to work with.

His name is really Philippe Poisson? Why the fuck didn't he keep that name? It's a perfect name for this douchebag.

As insufferable as he might get, I actually think he's hipster/douchebag enough to meet the expectations of that name. That name is like, condescending douchebag personified.

They say if you say it into a mirror three times during a full moon, Satan's douchey younger brother shows up and just shits all over your taste in music and consumable culture.

"Ugh, MAYONNAISE?! You might as well just shoot french fries directly into your arteries you fat turd.", "OH MY GOD YOU LIKE MODEST MOUSE AFTER THEY RELEASED FLOAT ON!? Kill yourself!", "Everybody knows the original Star Wars was the best. Once they had Revenge of the Sith, Lucas really lost focus." That sort of shit.

He cancelled it, actually, during the whole "we can't let Trump supporters get a foothold in VR" sperging.
