Oh Phil Fish, you silly man. I remember when the whole fiasco with Zoe Quinn was going down, and he was chimping out on twitter, and then this happened...

The sad thing is, he legitimately thought anyone actually cared.

This is the undying proof that Fish doesn't give a fuck about what he creates. He's not an artist, and he doesn't care about the audience he wants so badly.
Compare him to the guy who made Flappy Bird. IIRC, Flappy was made in a matter of hours and was free, it took off like Waffle Houses in the south. The guy who made it pulled it from the App Store because he didn't want to be known for something he really didn't care about. Phil made one game over five years, and sold it for 9 bucks. When bugs were reported he didn't bother to make a patch because fuck you. His response to criticism was to literally tell people to suck his dick, then leave the industry.

If you're in the game industry for money, go work for EA.
If you're in it for fun, make as many games as you can, maybe something will stick.
If you're in it for art, don't throw a fit when it doesn't make you a millionaire.

All those favorites on his tweets are because people are happy he canceled the projects, not because they are pleased with his sass.

I dislike Phil Fish almost as much as I dislike Robert Pelloni from Bob's Game infamy, but that statement isn't entirely accurate. The Xbox indie team had a rule where you had to pay a bunch of money after you issued a certain number of patches and Phil/Polytronics couldn't scrape up the dosh to get it submitted. This tells another story about how much money they actually made and how well their finances were in order but it wasn't entirely Phil's fault.

However his reaction to this - "It's only a small number of players so it's not that big a deal" - really shows what a total asshole for attention he is when he could have kept his fucking trap shut and let Microsoft take all the heat.

Edit:

See what I mean about needing to keep his fucking mouth shut? People were complaining his game got a $1 discount (they wanted it to be more).

In EA's defense, it's cyclical. You might not be aware of this, but EA essentially has waxing and waning cycles, where it will absolutely kick ass for several years, to an almost impossibly good degree, enter a cycle where it starts to flag, completely fuck everything up and then some down the road, become completely synonymous with rancid feces for a time, finally start to come out of it, normalize for a bit, and become awesome again before the cycle starts anew. EA's been around since the 1960s, so this cycle's happened a few times.

During the "Awesome" phases of EA, we've gotten stuff like Command & Conquer 3 and its expansion, most of its mid-90s sports titles, and the Strike series. During the "Shit" phases of EA, we've gotten Command & Conquer 4 (to date, the only game I'm currently aware of where friends of mine that pirated it felt ripped off), Ultima 9, and the new SimCity game. Leave them alone a few years, they'll straighten their shit out eventually.

I'd personally argue that those who are going in it purely for cash should take their shit to mobile gaming, personally. Like Star Trek Trexels and Final Fantasy: All the Bravest, which both charge hundreds for all their in-game content. I'd also argue that Square-Enix is infinitely more of a problem than EA is.

He really did thought that anyone save for a genuine fan of Fez even cared for non-existant projects that were used as nothing more than attempted insults on Twitter towards gamers.

From what I understand, Fish was a shitty human being even before he became as famous as he was. His indie fame just gave him a larger audience of people to be a dick to. But as people fought back against his dickery, he concluded that this was all everybody else's fault, and there was NO WAY his actions contributed to his problems.

Very O/T but, since we got onto EA and Simcity, I have to say that I think people made WAY too big a deal out of the whole Simcity launch. Yes it was a fuckup; yes I was pissed that I couldn't log on for days after launch; yes my expectations in the wake of SC4 were left wanting due to Maxis's design choices. But, really... People acted like it was the end of the fucking world, EA were child molesters, and Simcity was unadulterated shit. EA eventually corrected their errors and even gave affected customers a free game. To get even further off topic for a bit, I think it's a reflection of "the customer is always right" in extremis. People often rag on big companies when they screw up and start asking for crazy compensation as if it were owed to them, like that lady years back who won a million dollar lawsuit against McDonald's for not properly indicating that their hot coffee was hot. Sometimes shit happens, and you are not always owed a "there-there" cookie for having to endure inconvenience.

Wow that spiralled fast...

I didn't really know who Phil Fish was before I read this thread (I've been actively avoiding Gamergate-related nonsense), and after reading it, I feel like that he's probably the type of guy who would get really pissy and indignant that I don't know who he is. Guy seems like a manbaby who miraculously managed to produce something approaching professional quality once and expects nothing but unconditional praise for doing so. I genuinely laughed when I read the "JUST CANCELLED ANOTHER PROJECT" tweet as if anyone should give a shit that the Great Amazing Phil Fish decided to not grace us with his next opus of gaming genius.

Fish is less ambiguous; there's no real debate that he's an asshole laughingstock. But gamergate... Gamergate as a whole is two fields of shitfaces flinging shit at each other.
True. While GamerGate has spergs on both sides, Phil Fish is more clear-cut. Even before GamerGate, he showed himself to be a pretentious idiot who thinks PC's are good for spreadsheet's and that Japanese games suck (Sure you got some bad ones but there also exist good ones). Only GamerGate related things brought up in this thread would be how he acted during GamerGate, which is to say, wishing gamers would die and claiming to cancel some "games" he was developing, along with saying he was hacked.

Classic attention whore. "Nobody's talking about me anymore? Better shit my pants in public again!"

"No, you guys, I said modern Japanese games suck! Modern ones! See, these veteran Japanese programmers agree with me!"

It's funny how he cites Capcom as "forward thinkers" when Keiji Inafune, who agreed with him, left for all the reasons he claimed was poisoning Japanese games.
