Did he think Trump was going to trap them in the matrix to watch the election results repeatedly for the rest of time?

If only. I'm paraphrasing right here but only because I'm getting ready for work, so no arsenal of citations this time.

At some point last year, the entire idiot-run press had a mass pants-shitting session about one of the VR platforms (I think it was the rift) having a staff member who donated to Trump's campaign. It quickly devolved into a mass-shrieking session about how we couldn't let filthy wrongthinkers get a hold in the VR industry and Phil Fish announced that his game would specifically exclude the rift in response, only to cancel the game in its entirety later.

Phil Fish is my favorite kind of lolcow: The one that has basically the most streamlined path to success but squanders it by choosing irrelevant and amazingly autistic hills to die on.

Fun fact: The reason Phil stopped being involved with games development is because he's got minimal actual developmental talent and instead parasitizes those he works with. Fez, his seminal achievement that his buddies fapped themselves bloody over, ultimately was essentially stolen from what his co-developer initially designed (this is why the game will never get a sequel). He's a zero-talent hack who leeched off people more succeessful, nothing less.

Actually, one of the things that's frankly both insane and hilarious in hindsight is that Fish basically presaged the entire meltdown that was GG unfolding. His rise to fame happened solely because of his connections to his buddies in the indie circuit, including Zoe Quinn, and he features prominently in a e-documentary essentially sucking his dick that features multiple members of said clique (including Robin Arnott). Fish trying to portray himself as an oppressed auteur genius macks of the same "nerds are harassing me" angle that Quinn's clique turned into their primary marketing strategy, and all evidence is that if Fish hadn't been smarter than literally everyone else in the clique and made himself scarce relatively early into the GG debacle, he'd doubtlessly have been scorched by the Internet Autism Machine just as badly. As it stands, we already found out about him saying nothing about Quinn sexually harassing someone at his wedding and about his essentially stealing Fez's core game mechanics, so doubtless if they'd dug deeper they'd have found some hilarious shit.

For my money though, the best image surmising Phil Fish remains this:

Oh, and that IGF prize he won?

Only happened because he was essentially given it by his buddies in the clique.

Fez -- divorced of its production backstory and arguable derivativeness -- is a fantastic game. Anyone who disagrees with this is as exceptional as the man who gets credit for making it.

I also like his incredibly pathetic excuses for not porting it to PC and not patching a ridiculous bug. It was so obvious his reasons for both was that he didn't have the ability to do it once the people whose work he stole was gone. John pulled this in an even more hilarious way with Rev60.

This guy really is the embodiment of wasted potential, first as a game developer and now as a lolcow. How is it possible that not even Trump brought him out of his safe space?

He never had potential as a game developer.

Well, not as an actual developer but as a figurehead. With all the (undeserved) hype and praise at the time, he was in an excellent position to sign his name under other peoples work, just like he did with Fez, but he was too exceptional to just shut up and take the money.

A figurehead has to be someone charismatic. He was a completely shitty douchebag to every single person he encountered except those who relentlessly rode his dick. You can only get away with being a genius auteur who is also a total asshole if you actually have some talent. Phil had neither talent nor personality, so was useless at the one thing he did, which was being the public face of something. A public face you wanted to bitchslap into orbit.
