IQ should also not be conflated with personality or personal choices. Intelligent people fuck up all the time. Egos, not wanting to look bad in front of others, attempting to please people, willful ignorance and hoping it gets better, not wanting to take responsibility... all these things can influence people with an average or above average IQ. Basically, it's easy to see your friend as clincally retarded for choosing to get into drugs even if he got perfect scores on all his tests. Focusing more on functionability, grasping of abstract concepts, ability to do things for themselves, that kind of thing helps estimate it more than someone being a jackass and choosing to remain ignorant because they KNOW better or they decided it's already stupid because it isn't interesting (an ego problem).

Not really. Functional intelligence is quite a low bar. I know quite a couple of friends who have IQs in the 80s and it's not noticeable at all unless if you start yapping to them about abstract topics.

This. Anecdotal, but I heard from someone who worked as a counselor in prison. One prisoner he worked with had a funny story for how he got caught: he decided to rob a convenience store, parked his own personal car in plain sight of the store's CCTV. At this point he already fucked up. Next, he walked into the convenience store with his gun in his pocket, but realized he forgot something important... his mask. He could've just bought a soda or something and picked another day/store to rob, but instead he literally just goes back to his car, puts on his mask, and proceeds to rob the store.

The counselor asked him why he didn't figure his cover was blown after walking into the store literally seconds before the robbery in the same clothes before putting on his mask. His response was "anyone could've been wearing those clothes." Bear in mind, this guy had a girlfriend and a job as an electrician, before committing the robbery, he was just a typical, working, member of society.

I think there's way more people who just don't have second-order thinking than we probably realize.
