finished remake intergrade, didn't play the yuffie dlc. seems like they got rid of tifa's wallflowering when best girl aerith comes on scene. its an alright action game but not very rpg-y.

i saw a longplay of rebirth and the first 2 hours being the nibelheim flashback prevents me from starting it. does it get more rpg-y?

I can't speak for rpg-y, but it did fix every issue I had with the original game's combat, mainly that you can give your characters elemental attacks so they don't need materia to exploit it. They also added synergy attacks that do allow you to play more strategically.

did they fix the combat ai of doing more than regular attacks? because micromanaging their spells and abilities sucked.

You can get auto-ability and auto-magic materia, but not as many of them as you want, unfortunately. And by RPG-y oh boy... the open world is absolutely gigantic. You'll go crazy trying to 100% even Kalm in one sitting.

For the combat AI there's a mod for that, and its one of the top ones on Nexus.

It's multiple times bigger than Remake and Revelation is set to be similar. Easily can spend over 100 hours if you want to do everything.

Try minigames out the ass in general. Fort Condor makes a return, there's Gadgets and Gambits, the Chocobo glide challenge, a dolphin thing, the Honeybee Inn dance minigame got copied for the Junon parade (and holy fuck did that take me several tries to get the best result, but worth it), and there's a piano one in various hubs that's HARD AS FUCK. I wound up getting a trainer to auto-complete the last few songs because I just could not do it without my brain getting cross-wired and constantly moving the wrong sticks the wrong way from how fast and precise you needed to be. Sadly the version of Those Who Fight/Let the Battles Begin that's the final challenge for it isn't nearly as good as the one from Advent Children.

I’m of two minds about Rebirth; as a Final Fantasy VII fan, I hate it. They’ve changed too much of the original storyline and some of the stuff they’ve chosen to include from other Compilation of FF7 entries is cringe. But as a Final Fantasy fan in general, it’s probably the best Final Fantasy game since X, maybe even since IX.

Not really a high bar though, considering the second best of those is probably the boy band road trip with a story that was subjected to more awkward cuts than Joan Rivers' face.

I think jrpgs bungled the transition to AAA development as we understand it now.
I harp on Voice Acting a lot but it's many things which get in the way of player immersion. If I have to read a novel's worth of text just let me read it rather than wait on the SAG-AFTRA doofus to emote.
And things like SAG-AFTRA prevent them from turning this into a strength. Like they can't just hire stage actors, who always do better at voice acting, or get cheap but memorable talent.

And that's why, to the above post, we got such a worse stream of product and the more AAA the brand was (like Final Fantasy) the worse it was.
This genre was sort of designed around cutting corners with combat and gameplay but they let that spirit die.

Then also every deliberate throwback is made by heavy nostalgists who want the game to be twee and light. Nothing wrong with that exactly but the best games in this genre took their worlds seriously. But if you say you'd prefer the games to be more serious that is translated into a bunch of marketing buzzwords because even online discourse is a euphemistic algorithm now.

Sephiroth didn't meet the party til the boat (was a clone)
Bs fluff side quests (like finding flowers and kittens)
Marlene and aertith knowing everything
Shinra tower raid was fully operational in og7 whereas remake they neutered it to be less terrorist
President shinras death is just a sword to the back which is too hardcore for zoom3rs and this is just what I can remember from remake.

I’m almost at the end of my first XVI playthrough, and it’s actually what made me have the thought, too. While playing, I found myself thinking about how it took them this long to finally make a good post-6th gen Final Fantasy game(XV was fun up until the train) until I remembered Remake/Rebirth. Rebirth in particular, if they took all the VII-specific stuff out and replaced it with new FF-appropriate stuff and released it as Final Fantasy XVII it would probably have gotten me excited excited about the series like I was as a kid. It’s a good game, but the baggage of being a VII remake held back my enjoyment.

I never understand this complaint because Barret in OG 7 regrets his decision to do the bombings.

The whole Shinra involvement with the bombings it's a change and hammed up for sure, but it doesn't fall outside the fact in the original after the first bombing they essentially want to setup Avalanche to bomb the second reactor to garner favor toward Shinra along with a scapegoat for the people.

I think a lot of people who complain about elements with Remake misremember the original game or don't understand how bad the translation was for OG 7. There's a proper retranslation that exists for FF7 on PC which really showcases how much was lost in translation or just outright made up in the script. There's also a mod that reintroduces cut content that was found on the disc not made up fan elements and a lot of cut elements like the original Sephiroth reveal being just after the first bombing mission was reused in Remake.

The original Crisis Core did have a shitty story (Genesis) but when it comes to the characterization of Zack, his relationship with Angeal and the whole thing with Sephirot and Hojo's experiment shit gets real good.

FF7 had a shit ton of material exploring turks (before crisis) and when they announced Advent Children as what happens after the events of FF7 we got Last Order that expand Cloud and Zack escape from the shin-ra mansion, that also ties up with CC so you get the whole fucking picture of how Cloud lost his memory, and how he ended up in Midgard being a "Soldier"

I like Remake, while i don't like Rebirth, being this disingenuous is so annyoing, because retards like this will farm people that "hate" (neverplayed the game) and said "yeah, game sucks"

Some of the changes that particulary annoyed me (besides Jessie & co surviving) in the original they blew up the reactor and Jessie feels guilty because the explosion was too much but she knows they're at fault, but they have to do these things to save the planet. In remake everyone is good and Shin-ra is the big bad guy who is doing all the bad stuff and blame it on Avalanche.
