A shame really. Supergirl has been mostly subpar in both comics, and live action, but Supergirl had always rocked in animation.

I genuinely think she had the potential to be as popular as Starfire. Too bad Gunn picked one of the worst versions of Supergirl, and one of the worst stories to adapt from (Tom King's), and make her an obnoxious girl boss.

Like @Incecticyder said even a wholesome farm girl approach might had made her more likeable with Milly. But you get the worst of both worlds an ugly actress that just doesn't look like Kara, and with an unlikeable personality.
This goes back to the mistake of doing a younger Superman.

I think Earth 2 Clark would’ve been a good route or “Supergirl from Krypton” where Clark has a presence in the movie/story and you get to see him being her equivalent of the Kents.

So against better judgement, I saw the Supergirl movie :lossmanjack:

...was the movie's production like, a money laundering front or something? 'cause I don't think I've ever seen a major studio release be so unwatchable. & I mean that quite literally - the action shots were all dark/murky/backlit to hell and only visible in short bursts. Watching the film triggered an awful migraine. Lobo was the best part, and he was barely in it/felt edited in after bad test screenings. Krypto's cgi got progressively worse as the film went on - he literally looked like a Nintendog towards the end:

Also, can't believe I have to even type this - there's waaaay too many pee jokes in this film, to the point where I wondered if someone on the production had a pee fetish.

TLDR, I'm sure as many others have said in this thread, save your money. Heck, don't save your money - even blowing it on something dumb like scratch off lotto tickets, would be a better use than seeing Supergirl.

A $38M gross against AT LEAST a $170M (that's the minimum reported, so it's higher, but let's play along for now) production budget and let's call it an $80M P&A budget (again, probably closer to $100M but let's be generous). Means that as of now this movie has lost $231M.

If we are generous with week 2 drop off and international grosses, this piece of shit will earn a whopping NEGATIVE $200M.

The Kiwi Farms is more profitable than the DCU under Gunn.

Like a TON more profitable.

I can safely say that MCU has given us two one trick ponies in the form of Kevin Feige and James Gunn. Both of them make the same movie every time.

As someone who doesn't read the comics, Gunn's Superman was for me decent. It's very much a James Gunn movie, for better or worse. I think the good outweighs the bad, though. The whole "punk rock is le kindness" forced meme was weird, though. Fuck off with that reddit shit.

Everything about Supergirl looks like all the worst of a James Gunn project without him actually directing the movie to cover up some of the issues. I know he technically isn't credited as the writer, but come on now he's been hands on with every aspect of the DCU and everything is filtered through him.

The DCU is off to a weak start. I know Gunn is getting a lot of leeway here, but how many flops before the studio is forced to end the whole thing?

I hope this leads to Supergirl being put back in the fridge and Lobo never getting adapted again.

Lobo is everything wrong with comics in a character and was the rot before it became the rot.
Why this level of Lobo hate?

A shame really. Supergirl has been mostly subpar in both comics, and live action, but Supergirl had always rocked in animation.
I think she would have benefited from being part of a team. Teen Titans skipped her and so did YJ. JLU had her but she was rarely featured. Team shows do miracles for such characters. Just look at the TTs that aren't Robin.

I genuinely think she had the potential to be as popular as Starfire. Too bad Gunn picked one of the worst versions of Supergirl, and one of the worst stories to adapt from (Tom King's), and make her an obnoxious girl boss.
And made it worse. The villain was less evil in the comic and was to get redeemed. They failed to notice that, thought that he died, decided to make him even more evil to justify killing him and that is how we got here.

Like @Incecticyder said even a wholesome farm girl approach might had made her more likeable with Milly. But you get the worst of both worlds an ugly actress that just doesn't look like Kara, and with an unlikeable personality.
Punk works too. She has aggressive eyes so she can pull of a more intimidating look. That doesn't look very much like the Supergirl character but we are past that point. But there is another look that could work for Supergirl: Athletic, energetic, cheerful tomboy. I didn't include it because Milly can't play it but it would work for Supergirl.

This goes back to the mistake of doing a younger Superman.

I think Earth 2 Clark would’ve been a good route or “Supergirl from Krypton” where Clark has a presence in the movie/story and you get to see him being her equivalent of the Kents.
Younger works. They are aiming for long term. It was too soon for Supergirl though.

Also, can't believe I have to even type this - there's waaaay too many pee jokes in this film, to the point where I wondered if someone on the production had a pee fetish.
Not fetish. More like juvenile humor. Gunn is an edgy middle schooler.

Don't forget that theaters take their cut too.

DC wants everything too fast. It is the same issue the Snyderverse had. First movie: Superman. Second movie: second or third act spin-off/crossover.

Hm let's test this out for ourselves. I asked AI to make a fake DCU film where the 'farms saves the Justice League, here's what I got:

Justice League: System Failure

When Intergang weaponizes Apokoliptian technology to hijack the global internet and plunge the world into algorithmic chaos, the Justice League is forced to recruit the ultimate weapon of weaponized autism and online surveillance: Joshua "Null" Moon, the notorious administrator of Kiwi Farms.

The Unlikely Ally - As the League's own high-tech systems (including the Batcomputer and Cyborg's internal network) fall victim to Intergang’s Apokoliptian malware, Batman realizes they need someone who operates entirely outside conventional cyber-security. They need someone used to navigating the darkest, most chaotic, and unmoderated corners of the web. Enter Joshua "Null" Moon, operating from a heavily fortified, server-packed compound in a secluded location, surviving on energy drinks and spite.

The Team-Up - In a scene filled with sheer disbelief, Superman, Batman, and Cyborg show up at Josh's doorstep. Josh is entirely unimpressed, immediately critiquing Batman’s "edgelord aesthetic" and asking Superman if he's ever considered getting a real job. However, when Intergang’s malware threatens to permanently delete the Kiwi Farms servers and dox his entire user base, Josh begrudgingly agrees to help.

The Mission - While the Justice League handles the physical threat—smashing Intergang warehouses and taking on shock-troops in Metropolis—Josh serves as their unconventional "guy in the chair" alongside a deeply uncomfortable Cyborg.

The dynamic is pure friction:

  • Cyborg tries to use logic and advanced firewalls; Josh counters by launching massive DDoS attacks, deploying ancient internet lore, and using weaponized doxxing to track down Intergang’s secret physical server hubs.
  • Batman demands actionable intelligence; Josh delivers it wrapped in layers of dry, cynical irony and internet slang that leaves the Dark Knight visibly stressed.
  • Superman tries to appeal to Josh's "inner hero," to which Josh simply replies, "I'm just doing this because Mannheim is a lolcow who needs to be milked."
The Climax The finale takes place at Intergang’s main broadcast facility. While Superman and Wonder Woman battle Mannheim’s heavy hitters, Cyborg and Josh plug directly into the Apokoliptian mainframe. Mannheim attempts to break Cyborg's mind with the Anti-Life Equation. Just before Cyborg succumbs, Josh overrides the feed, redirecting the digital payload into a massive, global forum thread.

By turning the god-tier alien data into a chaotic, unreadable stream of internet memes and shitposts, Josh effectively defuses the Anti-Life Equation, causing the Apokoliptian tech to short-circuit from sheer, unadulterated nonsense.

This is the ending:

With Intergang defeated and the internet restored, the Justice League offers Josh a probationary consultant role with the League. Josh flatly refuses, telling them they are "too mainstream," and demands Batman pay him in untraceable cryptocurrency instead.

The film ends with Batman standing on a rooftop, staring blankly into the night sky, while Cyborg quietly asks him if they can please never speak of this adventure again

...holy shit, that does sound infinitely more entertaining than Supergirl.

There’s a possibility Paramount will lay off Gunn once they finish buying Warner Bros.

It’s quite jarring DC didn’t learn their lesson from Snyderverse. This time, they’re doing it in a time where capeshit is losing interest due to their overexposure during the 2010s.

I'd so pay to watch that. Gonna break the budget getting Gosling to play Null though.
I like how in the climax, Josh seals the Anti-Life equation away by sending it to an unspecified (although presumably the Ethan Ralph) Kiwi Farms thread. There has been times in the DC canon, where concentrated pure evil cancels out the Anti-Life-Equation's power (last time it happened I believe was that shitty Darkseid War arc). Grok cared more about canon than the current James Gunn-verse writers did!

50-50. They might fire him but they also might replace him with a guy who is just as stupid.

Does that count as change?

They tried to follow the Marvel recipe only they switched out the ingredients. This time, Gunn made way too many controversial decisions. Always in the news for something bad.

Or they might fold DC Studios into Paramount Pictures along with Warner’s distribution and marketing units. I could see them just sticking with Robert Pattinson Batman instead like WB did with Nolan’s Batman movies aside from Snyder’s Watchmen and a couple of one off movies and failed startups like Ryan Reynolds’s Green Lantern, which was supposed to launch a DC cinematic universe before it bombed and tried again with Man of Steel.

It's from the guy who made the 101 Dalmations prequel that turned the dogs into the villains, why would anyone expect this to be good?

Gunn said there is no way he is working for "Trump's bitch boys", so assuming an Obama appointed judge doesn't block the merger, he is gone next year.
