UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

In fairness, even as a Northerner, I wouldn't want to move to Manchester either. It was rough as fuck when I was younger, and I've heard about how "ethnically rich and diverse" it's become in the last 20 years. I've just never fancied visiting, personally.
Diversity has not made Manchester that much worse. It was already a shit hole unwilling to corral its degeneracy and various things have made it worse.

That actually reminds me of one thing Burnham did right, though no doubt he ended up bending the knee and I just did not see the news. When the Manchester police turned away the hordes of gypsy children descending on the city like the Mongol horde a couple of years ago, resulting in outcry from the usual suspects, he did not apologise. Now my preference would have been he said they should have been rounded up and shipped away in a single train on a one way trip to a camp before having the wailing representatives from charities and NGO's horse whipped to death I accept that I am aiming too high. Just refusing to say sorry is a step further than over half of current Labour would manage.

Honestly I'm hard pressed to say anything positive about him,but that was a shrewd move on his part.

Except we're not giving the northern capital to the tykes. Who won the war of the roses?
Don't care, London is full of traitors and Manchester is full of Pakis. The Northern capital should be in a distinctly British city, and from a cultural heritage standpoint, York mogs Manchester in pretty much every single way. They even still have white people living there, believe it or not! If we invested the kind of money into York that we tip into Manchester, it'd be one of the most beautiful cities on Earth and I refuse to shift on this. It's the better choice if given the right level of investment.

The best I can do is a compromise at Saddleworth Moor. Any further east and 1485 shall commence again.

I did my post grad stuff in York. Beautiful city, but also full of chinks now, but they are students.

"Man" blocks elderly woman from climbing steps.

Helpfully explains root cause of incident by showing hands:
Given he must have posted the video himself to social media I'm disappointed the Mail didn't find his account.

I'm being reminded of that dirty little cunt of a footballer who recorded himself taunting some idiotic homeless woman until she called him a nigger then harassing her and shoving it all over social media.

Ryan Gondoh, that's his name. These days he's with AFC Whyteleafe, one of many clubs who took him on despite it being established he's fucked up little shit that winds up homeless women till they do something he's "allowed" to retaliate for. Credit to him, that was 5 years ago and I was certain by now someone he's raped would have come forwards.

The government ought to be moved away from London. It's perverse that if some banker or lobbyist wants to influence government policy, they need only pop around the corner and take the relevant minister out to lunch in Mayfair. London can stay as a global financial capital, but the rest of country deserves a capital and administration that works for it.

Fuck it, have some purpose built technocratic campus built in the geographic (or other relevant) centre of the country and force those wankers to take a 2 hour train if they want to bribe some functionary.

This'll never happen obviously. There are far too many inherent structural and systemic issues with Westminster that makes pretty much any significant reform too difficult. (Those same issues are why the opportunities of Brexit were never going to be taken advantage of.) A severe indeterminate crisis is no doubt required to prompt the formation of some "Alternative British State", and to write the obituary of the UK of GB&NI (1707 - 20XX).

IMO giving the regions of England greater autonomy (i.e provinces, with counties as second-level subdivisions) is a better approach. A purpose built capital, let alone geographically centralised one, won't work because the rest of England (save relatively isolated areas such as the Welsh border counties) is effectively a contrubtriation where the bulk of the population lives in satellite towns (S-W Yorks/North West sans Cumbria/Derb-Nott-Leic triangle etc), creating the same bias towards London and the Home Counties.

I realise this approach would probably worsen county lines with loopholes or some shit but I really don't see a better option

Teenager cleared of murdering nine-year-old girl

Haven't seen this posted yet, but it's infuriating and it made me fedpost on another platform, where I am now banned. Anyways, while journalists are morons and always report inaccurately, and it's a bad idea to question exactly why a jury returned a not guilty verdict without having attended the trial myself, I am at a complete loss to explain based on the facts presented in this article, how this teenager was not convicted of manslaughter at a minimum. I can only assume the judge did not properly instruct the jury.

I can't believe he got away with it either!!

He grabbed a knife to supposedly scare his victim... And then he fled the scene after "accidentally" stabbing the said victim in the heart... Or rather, after she "accidentally" stabbed herself!! He then cowardly left her to die alone, because he damn well knew he did something horrifying!! He will only grow up to become a psychopath and a danger to society, when he knows he can literally get away with murder...

So like Canada? I got to tell you it won't work unless you have things like an electoral college.

Fuck that move the government headquarters to the shittiest most "diversified" place and require by law they actually reside there. Make them suffer the consequences of their actions.
