A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

They're still up and pissed from watching the football last night.
HOW is there any discussion of them going through to the next round?? One goal over three matches (beating Haiti 1-0). Three points and goal difference of minus three. I couldn't believe the BBC were still gassing them up as having a chance of going through as one of the best runner ups. Who designed this tournament? How shit do you have to play to actually go out in the group stages??

Went for a walk early doors to a localish nature reserve. It was nice but seriously disappointing to see discarded rubbish, bottles, food containers, and towels.

Also a treat to see some train faced slag walking her dog off lead despite multiple notices asking people not to do this because of nesting birds.

@Otterly, I know we've many problems but when you take over as lady high dictator, can you look at the wood chipper for people who litter?

It all felt really performative, tbh, because how many women who are being coerced into marriage are having civil wedding as opposed to being married by an imam or hindu priest?
I was going to say that pikeys and gyppos have been forcing women into marriages for decades, but they usually do the big fat gyppo weddings even if the bride is crying at the altar, so for you to be asked at the registrar's office is even weirder..

Burnham is set to appoint James Purnell (X) as his chief of staff; ex chair of Labour Friends of Israel, Blairite, and lobbyist. Guardian article (X)
Andy Burnham has chosen his Blairite former colleague James Purnell as his chief of staff, the Guardian understands, as he begins to finalise his team for government.
The Makerfield MP has picked his former cabinet colleague to be his right-hand man in Downing Street, in one of the most significant decisions he has made since returning to Westminster.

Purnell has indicated he will take the job, though he is understood to still be negotiating terms.
If he does join No 10 it would be a remarkable return to government for the former work and pensions secretary, who resigned in protest against Gordon Brown’s premiership in 2009.
Purnell made his name as a young minister under the governments of Tony Blair and Brown. He resigned as work and pensions secretary in Brown’s government after the 2009 local elections, in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to unseat the prime minister.

He later joined the BBC as director of strategy before becoming chief executive of the lobbying firm Flint Global in 2024.
Burnham and Purnell met as new MPs from the north-west and shared an office in their early years in parliament.
Burnham would joke that whenever there was breaking news, Purnell would get calls from Radio 4 and Burnham from 5 Live, in an indication of the different parts of the electorate to which both men appealed.
Both served as culture secretary, and Purnell also at the Department for Work and Pensions.
After the 2010 election loss, Purnell was offered the chance to be chief of staff to Ed Miliband as leader of the opposition but turned it down.
If finalised, Purnell would become the first major appointment to a putative Burnham government.
The former Greater Manchester mayor re-entered parliament this week and is expected to become prime minister next month after winning the support of his most likely rival, Wes Streeting.
Labour figures are still jostling, however, over who would take senior roles in Burnham’s cabinet, especially that of chancellor.
Many of those around the Makerfield MP want him to choose the energy secretary, Ed Miliband, though others warn this would anger the business community and some unions.
Those on the right of the party argue Wes Streeting would be a more sensible pick, who would be able to reassure the bond markets while also allowing Burnham to pursue some of his more radical policies.

He had child-rape images on his computer and allegedly blamed his researcher for the images. (X)
In 2003 when the child abuse images were found Purnell blamed his researcher labour councilor and school governor Paul Diggett, 35, who lives with his parents in Cheadle.

Diggett pleaded guilty to making and distributing indecent pictures of children. Despite the fact that they were not on his own computer but on Purnells. His punishment was to be expelled from the labour party and to be put of the sex offenders register.

Diggett, who stood for Labour as a Parliamentary candidate for Cheadle in 1997.
He then resigned from the governing bodies of Kingsway School and Brookhead Primary, Cheadle, the favourite job for PIE affiliates.

Questions arose to why anybody would allow another person to use their computer, let alone to download Child Pornography on it. It is unclear for how long the CSA had been being downloaded! The questions the deliberately incompetent police never asked was why Paul Diggert did not delete the images, knowing that his Labour comrade would easily be able to see them.

Freemason and Labour friend of Israel James Purnell was questioned about the Child rape images but was never to be charged. It was Paul Diggett who carried the can for Purnell, clearly both men should have been charged with possession of child pornography.

In 2009, Purnell was involved in the expenses scandal. Purnell told the
parliamentary authorities that his main home was in Manchester and
claimed the "second home" allowance for his flat in London.

In October 2004, Purnell sold his London flat but told HM Revenue and Customs it was his "principal home", not his "second home". A spokesman on behalf of Purnell said that "Any allegation that James avoided capital gains tax is
completely untrue. When he bought his constituency home, the sale of his London flat fell through, but it was sold within the period that HMRC continue to treat it as not being liable for CGT ... This would have been true for any taxpayer – there was no special treatment".

Also in 2004 Purnell claimed £395 for an accountant's bill which included "tax advice provided in October 2004 regarding sale of flat".

Whilst renting a flat between 2004 and 2006 Purnell claimed £100 a month for cleaning expenses and £586 for repairs. At the end of the lease the landlord kept the £2,520 deposit, claiming the flat to have been in a poor state. A spokesman for Purnell stated: "James felt frustrated that the landlord refused to return the deposit. He initially pursued the matter through legal channels but let it rest as the costs of fighting it further would ar outweigh recouping the deposit"

Allegations were made by a Sunday newspaper that Purnell claimed more than £1,500 a month rent for the flat although he was paying only half of the £1,820 a month rent and his fiancée was paying the rest. A spokesman for Purnell said

"Despite being entitled to claim in full for the whole rental cost incurred by him and his partner, James claimed less than the amount he himself spent. The rules of the House of Commons make it clear that an MP is entitled to be reimbursed for the rent or mortgage paid by the MP and their partner. Nevertheless, James went out of his way to ensure overall he claimed less for accommodation than he himself paid".Purnell also claimed £247 for 3,000 fridge magnets. Even he could not think up a trite excuse for this.

So in 2003 he was found with child abuse images on his computer, In 2009 he was found to have defrauded the Tax Payer. In 2013 he is rewarded for his criminal activities by being made head of strategy at the state owned BBC. Or maybe the appointment is the price of his silence?

If they aren't keen on Carns, they certainly wouldn't like Darren Grimes. (I know you meant Jones)
In my defence it's very warm 🥵. I normally try avoid using that emoji as it just reminds me of Kevin Gibes commenting on a selfie.
So what is the difference from Starmer?
Yet to see much. The main difference so far is that he plans to set up "A Number 10 in the North" by sending half the operational team up to Manchester.
I am entertained that online commentary I've seen around this has already dropped from "fuck London, they get everything" to "Oh I see, when Andy says the North he just means Manchester, fuck Manchester, they get everything in the North".

You have to be very, very shit. Scotland somehow still have a decent chance of progressing.

SCOTLAND HASN'T BEEN COMPLETELY SHITE IN THE WORLD CUP! INDEPENDENCE NOW NOW NOW NOW!!

Aside from the headline, it's coming out that maternity care across the country is in an absolute dire state. The Lucy Letby trial is looking more and more like a sick joke.

I spent quite a bit of my wedding day, wondering what would have happened if I was a muslim woman who said, 'help-get me out of here.'
Most Muslim women wouldn't dare speak up in that situation, and the registrars are only supposed to intervene if they have suspicion of coercion - so suspect box ticking got out of hand here. Almost all referrals to the forced marriage unit are from other agencies anyway.

We're importing badly trained, lazy third world healthcare workers to take care of other third world imports and their retarded, inbred families and then acting suprised when third world shit happens. And we're paying for all of it.

Speaker's been mad about Starmer's government announcing things to the media before the house for months now. Latest is that there's 12 new asylum centres going up around the country, nobody knows where, and it's only because of a leak that anyone in the house even knows what's going on. Starmer's last act is presumably to punish a bunch of disloyal MPs or sabotage areas that didn't vote labour.

HavIng government spread a bit further afield than the same 8 foot square in London isn't a bad idea, but the man doing it is a bad man. So...
It'd probably only really last as long as Andy Burnham. The problem with moving half of Downing Street's operations to Manchester is he then spends more time in Manchester... away from all the plotting and scheming going on with MPs in Westminster. We've basically just seen what happens to a leader who can't ingratiate himself with the various factions in his party.
It could be fixed by moving the seat of power to Manchester, which I wouldn't be opposed to, but good luck dragging the MPs and Lords out of the Palace of Westminster. Perhaps once it inevitably burns down.

The London elite don’t want to move to Manchester. Some inconvenient function will be moved there and it’ll be a punishment assignment for anyone getting uppity or threatening those in power.
