Alternative fashion is a vague, broad, and somewhat meaningless term now, just post anything related to goth, punk, vintage, any sort of -core or other subculture related fashion. Its hard to find a good place to talk about alt fashion without running into trannies, tiktok kids with no fashion sense, and fetishizing males.
I snatch up these pants every time I see them at the thrift store.

They go really well with a bullet belt and a metal shirt. I must seem bipolar because one day I'll wear that then the next day I'll wear an outfit like this

I have a sunhat from the 40s that I wear when I go for walks

My weak spot is shoes, its really hard to find shoes second hand in the style I'm looking for.

When I was young, I was in love with the store Charlotte Russe. The clothing at the time was some mix of Victorian, goth, boho, grunge and babydoll. Sadly, the styles of theirs that I loved were kind of on the way out by the time I was old enough to wear them.

A few years ago I came across another Charlotte Russe store and they had turned into a Forever21 type brand. Fucking tragic.

Some examples of the unique cool clothes they had between '95-'05:

society must gas western j-fashion appropriators. particularly the lolita and gyaru communities
I don't think there's any good (Western) community for j-fashion anywhere anymore. In the past there were always your dorky weebs but at least people were dedicated about trying to look their best, now it's all been mixed into the rest of that crowd and most coords aren't even recognizable as the fashion they're supposed to be. Also an increasing amount of westerners nowadays are acting weirdly entitled to j-fashion (see: whining about the lack of plus plus sizes) and failing to understand or try to adapt to the fact that the clothes are designed for East Asian women. /cgl/ is overtaken by coomers. *sigh* Personally, I remain fond of lolita and casual j-fashion although I don't do much shopping at the moment.

now it's all people who think THEY are the authoritative source for j-fashion, all of which originally is just "wear what you want and have fun". the colonization is in their dna

plus sizes for lolita is kind of understandable because it doesn't equal fatness. some of us just have huge knockers or broad shoulders :( i recently found out i can squeeze into an old dress i got in a small that isn't being manufactured anymore, and it straight up restricts my breathing because the barrel of my torso itself is wider than it was when i was 14 when i got it. i need to find a good tailor that won't charge me up the ass to get it modified.

Yeah, I've seen that mindset a lot. There's that one lady FluffyKawaiiJo or whatever who's made it her life mission to spread the word that lolita is for everyone of all races and genders and weights and such and I'm not going to cry muh cultural appropriation considering I'm also not a true and honest Harajuku street walker, but I've always found it odd and distasteful considering that she's just some random euro woman speaking for a subculture with specific roots. Why should her validation mean anything at all? Iirc there was also that black lolita who was wearing hanfu while also complaining about white girls listening to rap, lol.

Sure, as a womanlet I can relate (with American clothes) to feeling bummed when something you like isn't available for your body type. I honestly totally understand the disappointment, even if someone is actually just fat. Some of the older stuff is definitely fairly limited.
What's unhinged behavior however is the people who act like it's a personal affront when a small Japanese indie brand doesn't accommodate a 110cm bust and start whining sour grapes. Despite the narrative about super teeny tiny sizing and unrealistic standards, I think a lot of lolita brands are actually surprisingly accommodating of different sizes, at least nowadays. Even with one-size AP (which people complain a lot about), features like shirring and waist ties can do a lot to help multiple people fit in the same thing, so the one-size can really be more like 2-3 sizes, depending on the garment.

I agree. They need to shut the fuck up. Same with American jiraimaxxers. Zero manners and they harassed jirais from other nations over nothing. You're as much as a fake jirai as the rest of us non nihonjin

I’m autistic as fuck so this might just be me being an elitist or whatever but it annoys me to no end when I look at online jfashion spaces and see these idiots asking the most obvious questions that could be solved from one google search especially when it comes to shit like gyaru?? It’s like they’re fucking brain dead when it’s obvious that so much of what you can and can’t wear is up to the substyle. Like would it kill these people to look up some scans

No it's not elitist this shit is annoying as fuck. Every space like this ends up catering to the dumbest and laziest person possible and ends up boring for people who are actually somewhat knowledgeable and can use google when they don't know something.

I am a consummate edgelord and love me some good alt fashion and a nostalgic trip to Hot Topic. I don't really align with any specific subculture other than metalheads, though my clothing choice has wiggled from bad mall goth to punk-esqe to I'm Edgy But Have a Public Facing Job. My priority has also shifted from just looking cool, to being comfortable during a work shift and bike commute and having clothing items that are good quality. Spending money on a proper leather jacket has been so much better than buying cheap pleather jackets that just disintegrate after a few years.

Contrast is the main thing I focus on when styling outfits- Many years ago I read an interview with a hip-hop artist about his style, he wore regular polo shirts and jeans paired with one or two very flashy accessories. He said he keeps the clothes simple so the jewelry really shines.
I wear mostly black but coordinate my makeup with whatever color my band shirts are so there's always a little pop of color. Same logic applies to fits, looser bottoms look good paired with a fitted top and vice versa. A few silver jewelry peices pop against the black.

Assortment of older favorite looks and current outfits I doodled. I had a mohawk for a very long time but I'm glad that I grew it out, I started to feel very pigeonholed into specific styles. That and people take it as an invitation to ask your pronouns and apparently responding by threatening to throw them through a window is "rude".

Love a good camo print! I have a thrifted US Army jacket that I love because it's so comfortable.

Forgot I made this thread... I've been in a slump with fashion. I stopped wearing a lot of my 50s dresses, just got tired of being stared at and standing out. The attention I got was mostly positive but I don't want any attention at all. I don't go all out, my goal is to not look like I'm wearing a costume. Oh well, I'm going through more of a metal/goth phase now anyways which somehow gets me less stares, but I feel equally as uncomfortable in. I'd like to dress more feminine (I dress like the fuckin Ramones rn) but don't know how to accomplish that while also dressing appropriately. I'll wear fishnets and leather skirts but that's not exactly best for a run to the grocery store

Love your style and drawings!! I hate how everything is political down to what you wear. People assumed shit because I dyed my hair funny colors, got tired of assumptions being made about me before I even opened my mouth.

Fuuuck, I feel you, because I love wearing my circle skirts and just feeling cute, but I hate when people compliment it. That sounds so conceited and weird, but it is what it is.

But on the other hand! I want to dress how I want to fucking dress, people liking it, hating it, giving me attention be damned! I want to embrace my inner KingCobraJFS (the sexy goth cowboy fashion icon), and not give a shit!

I'm looking into dressing more pastel goth, and making my own clothes for it. I just wright the silhouette wasn't just, "black top + pastel skirt".

Thank you kiwifrend!
I've had some interesting experiences back in college partly from the mohawk and when it was dyed crazy colors and partly from other things I was wearing. At one point of college I had safety pins stuck in my jacket because it was what all the edgy kids used to do in middle/high school, but then the safety pin got appropriated by the SJW crowd to signal that they're the "good" white people. I had a teacher ask me if that was why I had the pins in my jacket, and I took them out that night. :( She didn't even ask it in a judgy way, it was the idea that I could get lumped in with all the sanctimonious assholes trying to look like good people.

Remember when blue bracelets were ruined because it meant you were a good white woman who didn't vote for Trump? I'm also sad about rainbows in general being co-opted. And any combo of white, pastel blue, and pastel pink. And I'm not over striped socks being ruined. I used to think these would be so cute to wear with a fall outfit. No longer.

Same... funny enough I have a Cobes inspired collage I was working on a while ago that I never finished.

Pinterest has a collage maker and it's a really fun time waster. I didn't like how stock image this one was turning out.

Those are really cute too... *sigh*

I have a gripe with 2020's goth fashion leaning more on looking drag-like and nobody DIYing as much anymore. I don't like seeing how 'clean' it has gotten, for lack of a better word. The fashion feels watered down and sanitized. Too approachable. Consoomerism infecting my beloved subculture and it becoming more accessible to normies breaks my black heart. I don't like big fashion brands and think they're fucking cringe.

I'm in my 20's, so I'm not like, an old fucker. But I'm thankful I was exposed to the older stuff and how to get creative with my own shit before tiktok slop started pumping out girls who all look the same with the same overly popular songs playing in the background. Skibidi toilet, or whatever the fuck we say now, I guess.

gen z goth sincerely believe that 80s goths got their inspiration from drag queens, which is objectively wrong when, a) most drag queens didn't wear the make-up they do now, back then, part from divine, and b) siouxsie sioux and others, were getting their inspiration from silent film stars and the graphic makeup looks from the 60s

i hate the total misinformation that tiktokers spread about goth subculture, because i know people who were there in the 80s and 90s, and the total drag queen worship, which is an indicator of low iq imo.

I saw someone claim goth was inherently political because goth came from the 60s/70s hippie culture which is just mind boggling how they managed to come to that conclusion
