While I suppose it's possible that you might have to avoid using certain animal products in the production of metal jewelry, more likely this is just an example of marketing to gullible hipsters. Sort of like how food companies started slapping "Gluten free" on stuff that never had gluten in it anyway, or "Organic" on stuff that wouldn't have had any reason to have pesticides used on it.
