Never underestimate how off-the-charts insufferable a golden child can be, though, if that is the dynamic here. If Bowie the GC ends up being Mommy's little sidekick (out of a desperate and natural need for love and affection from mom), he could easily direct any rage and contempt at Rylee. That's likely due to him being raised from birth to age 2 by his Nana Beth, and then by Tess’s ex (who has him now) and being sent back to Mississippi for summers as a little kid. Rylee was given a more normal foundation to function from - although it was still chaotic and lacking foundational support by a parent. However, he was able to cobble together a support system based on his mother and erstwhile "stepfather".

Bowie had Nick and Tess and a rotating cast of LA wannabes, with Jolene forming his only parental support system. But now that Jolene has distanced herself somewhat from his mother, Tess is all he's got. He wasn't read to, taught his letters and numbers, given basic etiquette instructions, or even properly potty trained. He turns 5 in June and will be massively behind his peers emotionally and intellectually come fall and kindergarten.

And if school is still online in LA come fall, I'd bet anything Tess holds Bowie back rather than homeschooling.
