So the ship drew a dick while waiting and then manages to block off the Suez canal for several days.
There's some tinfoil hat material in there.

This is going to completely fuck what's left of the global economy. Now they're saying that they're not going to come up with any kind of plan until Monday. Furthermore, there are apparently micro-fractures in the hull because the ship ran aground on both sides, and the weight from the shipping containers is making it sag in the middle.

Pulling this fucker out with tugboats is the dumbest plan in the world. They won't be able to do it, and they're probably going to break the ship if they try.

It would be such a pity if the ship gets on fire eventually. Removing the burned wreck would take months and that would be very sad

Even if that doesn't happen now, some people might get some funny ideas for the future. Hypothetically, if someone would be playing a video game where the objective is doing damage to the global economic system, putting a bomb and sinking a ship like that and blocking a major naval trade route would give you much better high score (in the hypothetical game that you are playing) than bombing some random building. I just hope nobody tries that in real life!

Honestly, all they'd really have to do is pull up near the canal in a Jeep and shoot an RPG at it and blow a hole in the side. They're in Egypt, after all. I'm sure there are a bunch of jihadis who have a bit of heavy weaponry in the area. Blow a hole in the side of the ship, and they can't even think about trying to move it because it will sink and block the canal until it can be disassembled, which would take 4 or 5 months.

I was actually thinking something like this earlier. This would be a really good time for a pissed off country to start a war. Supply lines are completely fucked now.

12% of global trade goes through that canal. But it's actually a much larger percentage of global trade. All of the component parts which are assembled in Europe and the US pass through that canal. So if, let's say, Volkswagon can't get the parts they need, they have to shut down. Pretty much all of the computer chips in the world are made in China, so this blockage cuts off ALL of those computer chips to Europe.

This is actually a Mega Happening. This thread should be in the Happenings section.

Honestly it's pretty surprising that this hasn't happened until now.
There are a few reasons:
>they didn't have ships big enough to touch both banks of the canal until about five years ago
>you would have to be a literal retard to fuck up this badly with today's technology (or a woman, apparently -- I'm KIDDING)

The more I look into this, the more it looks like this might have been deliberate. The ship apparently lost power for over an hour while they were doing a slight course correction, which means the rudder was turned and pointed it into the shore.

Don't forget that drugs also come to Europe on container ships like that, and companies like Camorra are on much tighter deadlines than companies like Volkswagen. A few months long holdup on the cocaine supply line could cause chaos all over Europe

People really underestimate how fragile the backbone of technologic society is, a good example is the "metcalf sniper attack" military exercise where $15 millions damage was done just by shooting 100 rounds from an AK at electrical transformers. Since it was just an exercise no permanent damage to the grid was done but a more coordinated attack at a few substations at once could cause massive chaos

Ostatnio edytowane:
How could they unload the ship? Is a Sikorsky big enough to shift a fully loaded container, or do they need to assemble an STS crane (AT-AT) there?

(Edit to partially answer my own question: A Sikorsky can lift 20,000 pounds. A big shipping container weighs about 9,000 pounds empty. So this does not seem practical.)

Here's some nightmare fuel for you:
Most of the human trafficking in the world is done with ships. They toss 50-75 slaves in a shipping container with a few bags of bread and a piss bucket. A few of the containers on the stuck ship are probably filled with people. It's guaranteed that many of the ships that are now waiting in line have shipping containers full of people. If those people run out of food or water, they're going to die. Think about that for a minute. It's fucking horrific.

Do you think this event could serve as the trigger for a stock market crash? I'm not well versed in economics but I've noticed that the dow has dipped a bit over the past few days, and there's been talk about a potential crash for months now.

I mean, the stock market is fake anyway, but it's a real possibility. They've always had ways of falsely propping up the stock market but I can't see how they could cover something like this up. If every car company in the world has to stop making cars because they can't get the parts they need, that's huge. If GE has to stop making home appliances because they can't get the parts they need, that's huge. Pretty much every industry in the North America and Europe is dependant on the parts they get from China and Taiwan.
They could find a new and creative way to fuck with the numbers or rig the stock market even further like they did with the Gamestop thing, but I can't see how.

Regardless of who the captain is and taking into account the drift pattern of that ship, one thing is very certain.

The captain is condom.

Well that's still roughly 5 years of 24/7 travel, of god knows how many ships an hour, and it's just now that one gets stuck intentionally/unintentionally.

An RPG literally wont do shit to a ship of that size. Now if someone were to stuff a few tons of explosives into a shipping container marked "steel beams" or somesuch, so that it gets loaded into bottom of cargo hold for weight distribution.... Things could get interesting.

Agree with the mega happening part of your post.
