Speaking of Juliana Wetmore, has anyone else heard of Sophia Weaver and her mom Natalie? Sophia was born with Rett syndrome and other various grotesquely disturbing deformities that are the things of nightmares. Her mom made a huge stink about someone making a post on twitter using Sophia's picture as an example of why abortions should remain a thing. The mom eventually succeeded in getting the poster's account suspended for "participating in abusive behavior." Most of the tweets directed at her weren't even hateful in the least and were just making the very rational points that having Sophia or children like her aborted would have been the most loving thing to do considering her issues, and that if parents decide to have a child like that, they should be responsible for all of their resulting medical bills. The mom doesn't seem to be a fundie like the Wetmore's or shill Sophia out like Gwen, but she still annoys the shit out of me.

Imagine getting trolled so hard that it gets you on the news. I smell tard cum.

But when Juliana was born and they learned they carried the genes for Treacher-Collins, they stopped having biological children and went with adoption.

If that's true, that's actually pretty stupid of them, unless they had a very unusual genetic situation. Treacher-Collins is an autosomal dominant -- that is, you don't carry the gene for it, because you only need one copy of the gene to develop the disorder. Someone with Treacher-Collins themselves has a 50% chance of passing it onto a child, but someone without it will only have a kid with it if they get a very unlucky genetic roll (about 1 in 10,000). The only way someone without Treacher-Collins could have multiple children with it is if that roll either comes up a truly amazing number of times, or they have a very specific beyond-implausible genetic situation that wouldn't even be tested for unless they had multiple kids with it already. Or they had an ultra-mild case of it themselves, but mild Treacher-Collins usually remains mild rather than causing something as severe as Wetmore's for the same reasons people take after their parents in general.

I don't mind the Wetmores at all. They're doing the best they can for poor Juliana.
The adoption is some above and beyond shit, the kids they adopted were foreign kids with TC syndrome (I think) who otherwise would have been institutionalized for life. Juliana probably feels very loved with all her brothers and sisters.

Whereas Gwen probably would have another baby with Claire and Lola's condition given the chance. Knowing what Lola would suffer, she let that happen. And it's gross. If she'd stopped at Claire, I'd feel some sympathy for her like I do Juliana's mom. But she didn't. So fuck her.

"We have to deal with so many challenges, but because of her my life is better," Weaver says. "I know what true happiness is."

Well, thank god she's happy! Her child is six bags and an upper palette, but through her unbelievable suffering, mama gets to have a slightly happier life! It's like The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, only instead of an entire utopia, it's just one upper middle class white lady!

Well-off white woman cannot handle that people on the internet say nasty, horrible things, complains to Twitter management until they rework the rules just for her, brings more attention to her poor daughter who lacks the capacity to even be affected by mean tweets.

That was a real low point for msm glurge stories in general. They were riding so high on the "autism isn't a disability" train, why not say that being a zero IQ, brainless pinhead also isn't a disability?

Rest in potatoes, poor kid.
No she doesn't. It's just a seizure.
Ah, looked like she was weeping, her face contorted like that. Either way it's very sad indeed. I hope Claire passing gives Gwen the balls to face the inevitable with Lola but I think it'll go the other way

So this paper has a case most similar to Claire. Of particular note, it says the kids reached NO milestones.

http://thejoyofjules.blogspot.com/2016/12/genetics-results-asparagine-synthetase.html?m=1

This kid here also has the same disorder, but seems to have some function of the protein that is broken in the disorder as she is far more capable than any other cases.
I hope they can use her case to potentially come up with some gene therapy to potentially save these kids or at least make their lives less shit. The fact that these children can't take typical seizure medications is heartbreaking. This case is especially sad because the child looks mostly normal and there was probably no way they would have known this in vitro to choose to end the pregnancy or not. It's probably much worse to watch a normal child shortly deteriorate until death than having a potato remain a potato (not that the latter is a walk in the park either if you didn't expect it and don't have a hundred nurses and nannies at your beck and call)

Unfortunately it's incredibly rare (less than 20 known cases including the Hartley potatoes), so it's more or less an orphan disease. It's unlikely it will be prioritized for research.

I stopped keeping up to date with this one because it was such a fucking pitiful case: 2 little girls with the cognitive level of a baked potato being shown to the online world sans dignity by their attention whore of a mother; all and anyone who got caught in the vortex of that family had to have their lives circle around them.
Big brother Cal getting his pre-senior prom picture with his girlfriend? Not without your little gremlin sisters, you won't!

As a human being who doesn't know how a human can exist without knowing they exist, I hope there's an afterlife where Claire (and later Lola, she's not going to be too far behind) can do whatever the fuck she wants now that she's out of that cicada husk called a body....:optimistic:

Requiescat in pace, kiddo.

Edit: I meant Lola, but you know, Gwen is a fucking bitch so...

It's sad to see a child die but I'm at an ethical schism here. All life is sacred but could what these two girls have and or had be genuinely called a life? Also I hate the eat her cake and have it too attitude the mother has where she's all "They're just like me and you just the disorders obscure it" then if so then would the two souls trapped in those flesh prisons appreciate their daily torment and pain being broadcasted out to the world? If these are really or were teenage girls I'm sure they'd like to have their privacy.

I hope Cal can shake off his family's sick brainwashing because it's a crying shame that a young man had to almost his entire life play second fiddle to two writhing in pain meatsacks. Gwen Hartley is an apex example of those who only think with their hearts and feelings tend to be the most destructive to those around them "because it felt/feels right/good".

Almost in the end if Gwen wanted to show God's mercy and love I'd say it'd have been best if she allowed them to die. It's not mercy or grace to force other people to live Hell on Earth because it makes you feel good.

Gwen posts the pictures where they look the most aware. The videos tell a different story, they make it obvious they have no awareness, or close to it. Claire could tell just enough to know when she was in unusual positions or situations. The only time Lola had a reaction that didn't involve rooting was when she was in their hottub.

I can’t help but feel like the pictures where Lola is dressed as a lobster exude pure misery, or at least some kind of exhaustion. A spark of some kind of suffering on Lola’s face. But maybe that’s just my brain’s attempt to project emotions on a being that I cannot hope to comprehend.

I didn't follow any of this until a couple days ago, but frankly this is probably the most depressing thread on the site. Yeah, there's the Schofields and the McMaths which are also immensely depressing/infuriating reads, but this is like a whole other level of human misery. The Hartley sisters' lives are pure existential nightmare fuel; they really were just flesh golems forced to live while barely living. They can't even comprehend their bodies' degradation since they literally did not have the brains for it. I can't even bring myself to watch any of the videos because it's just too much for me. And all that would be bad enough on its own, but it's Gwen's exploitation of them that adds that extra layer of grossness to the package.

I can't even take solace in Claire dying because it's not like she was ever truly alive. Not to mention, Lola is still alive and apparently in much worse shape. I know I'm basically preaching to the choir here, but reading all this for the first time over these past few days has been one of the most morbidly fascinating reads I've come across in a long while.

I believe Lola had chicken pox in that picture (if you look closely you can see the marks on her face). She was very ill and apparently almost died.

I know. I’m speculating whether she could feel the effects of the chicken pox at any capacity because her face certainly looks like it does, in some way.
