I think a lot of it comes from the breakdown of the family, and the stigma against seeking treatment for mental illnesses.

That could be part of it, but I suspect the second part of your statement is the most relevant here. Yeah, I know the news said he had no known mental illness, but the key word is "known". He could have been hiding one. Or, he could have simply had a stressor that made him snap. That happens.

I feel ya. I woke up this morning to text messages from my sister in law saying she and her husband are ok and not to worry. I had no idea why she would have sent that until I got online with my morning coffee at 4:30am.

I hope your friend's mom will be alright, this is some major trauma and the mental pain and possible PTSD will be there for years. I had some friends there but none of them were hurt, a few coworkers were locked in the hotel until 4am though so those guys are taking the day off to recover. Friend of a friend took one in the chest and is in stable condition, dude is a fighter.

You know that was an extraordinary occurrence at the time. And presidental assassination isn't quite the same thing as gunning down random people.

Something is going on culturally in the U.S. Maybe what's happening is an inevitability in a country like this, but it didn't always happen with this frequency.

That's great to hear. One of my oldest (as in longtime) friends works the night shift at one of the casinos. Has had a family member experience gun violence in the past, so I can only imagine. Phone just keeps ringing, so I sent an e-mail. Just waiting for a reply now.
