I was thinking about this post since it reminded me of an older Pat lore, the traffic ticket zoom court.

He was apologetic and almost pleasant. Compare that to his correspondence with the government now.

Off pat specific topic, but why is the US highway speed limit only 55 mph?
70 mph is the limit in the UK, and 120 kph in EU countries, which is 74 mph.
Excepting Germany where some of the Autobahn have no upper limit and a minimum speed limit of 50 kph.

55 mph seems low, especially with the bigger straighter wider roads and the larger distances to cover.

That is probably just the speed limit on a particular section of highway. USA does not have a national speed limit anymore afaik. For Interstates I think the average is 70.

It depends where you’re at. In the cities where there’s constant on-ramps they’ll drop the speed; outside of the Eastern Panopolis you’re rarely more than 20 minutes away from a 65+ mph highway, interstate or otherwise.

Iirc the speed limits used to be 80mph pretty much everywhere but there was a gas shortage sometime around the 60s and the federal government started offering money incentives to states to enforce a 55mph speed limit to decrease consumption and in theory increase safety as well since cars back then were actual death traps with some 50% of accidents resulting in it.
I think a lot of places just never changed it back and it doesnt really help that there’s a big money incentive for police departments if they keep it low.
