Having lived in a country with high corruption for a while, I can tell you that corruption starts at the top. No boss will accept a subordinate behaving worse or getting a bigger cut than himself. By the time it trickles down to traffic cops taking bribes and committing petty theft, the top level authorities are more like mob bosses than civil servants. This especially applies to politicians, since the police and civil servants can't engage in corruption without the political institutions covering for them (and getting a big cut of the loot of course).
More perverse, honest civil servants are removed in systems like that. If you arent in on the grift, you are a liability.

New significant aftershock, M4.8 in magnitude, around 20 minutes ago. I noticed this one as I was in the bathroom and I felt myself moving. I get out of the bathroom and I see the cord of the phone in the hotel room moving. My cat fast asleep, he didn't notice it, thank God, he has had some very stressful days.

In more positive news, the main runway in Maiquetia, Simon Bolivar International Airport, has been repaired and is already actively being used to receive aid.

I'm paranoid as fuck, holy shit Im from Carabobo and the things on my house were shaking once again, now I'm trying to calm down, drinking some water and praying but I'm noticing some little cracks on the wall/columns and I don't know if they were already there (my house is 25 years old) or the earthquake fucked some things up, they're pretty thin tho, thinner than a coin, take care mis panas.

One of those "Misión Viviendas" finally fell, shit is crumbling all over the place for what i heard from friends still there, there was an aftershock of 5. Something, even here in Caracas i can still feel some shaking going on.

The American units will be working at the Venezuelan governments direction. Its also highly unlikely we are sending pipe hitters for a security mission beyond basic force protection personelle
Given what the “Venezuelan government” seem to be doing on the ground, I still hope that our military will be there making sure the communists aren’t running off with aid and blocking resources to their own people. I don’t even understand why someone on the ground would be that fucking evil but I guess I’m naive.

The people in power there are only hanging on by a string because Trump got distracted dealing with the usual Islamic goat fuckers. I’ll be pretty fucking mad at the Trump administration if they aren’t sending pipe hitters. It’s pretty clear any money or aid will be stolen and no one is in the mood to fund communists in a nation we are supposed to be aligning with. If there was ever a time to have “boots on the ground” in Venezuela it’s now, when the US can provide material, direct help to the people there who need it.

US SOUTHCOM Update.

RELEASE: Update on SOUTHCOM support to Venezuela earthquake relief

U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) directed additional U.S. military capabilities to Venezuela today in support of ongoing U.S. earthquake relief efforts requested by the Venezuelan government and led by the State Department.

  • SOUTHCOM is deploying a Contingency Response Element (CRE) to assist Venezuelan government and aviation authorities with airport surveys, assessments, and airfield management to safely restore air traffic and aviation operations in affected areas. Five U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft are scheduled to transport the CRE to Venezuela beginning today. The CRE will expand the ongoing assistance provided by a U.S. military Airfield Assessment Team already working with local Venezuelan officials and the U.S. interagency response team to help the country resume its critically needed airport operations.

  • Another C-17 aircraft will transport two Miami-Dade County search and rescue teams to Venezuela to join critical life-saving efforts underway in devastated areas.

  • U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys will continue to transport key personnel and resources to Venezuela to support the U.S. and international assistance efforts requested by Venezuelan authorities.

  • A U.S. Marine Corps UH-1Y Super Huey helicopter, embarked with the U.S. amphibious transport dock USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28), will provide rotary lift support to earthquake relief efforts.

  • U.S. Army CH-47 Chinooks and crews from Joint Task Force-Bravo will pre-stage at Curaçao later today, postured to begin providing airlift support to the mission.

  • U.S. Space Force, through its SOUTHCOM component, continues to provide satellite imagery of devastated areas to disaster relief planners to aid them in assessing where immediate live-saving and aid efforts are needed most and identifying what capability requests to prioritize.
Updated information about the Department of War’s support to the U.S. government’s earthquake relief mission in Venezuela and life-saving assistance to the Venezuelan people will be posted on SOUTHCOM’s official social media accounts.

Planning of additional U.S. military support is ongoing in close coordination with the U.S. State Department, the Venezuelan government, and other partners and Allies contributing to the ongoing international relief effort and will be announced once confirmed.

If you're really concerned you should check out in your local area for construction companies and volunteers, there is a number of teams of volunteers from the Colegio de Ingenieros Civiles that are checking structures, there is also a number of construction companies that are also offering, free of charge, inspections, at least in my city, where the behavior of the civil society, volunteers and even from government officials has been stellar.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're from Valencia, and therefore, gay.

These images are circulating on WhatsApp. Apparently, people are selling children online, and there are reports of kidnapped children. I'm not sure how credible the news is, but we need to spread the word. Please take care of your children and don't leave them in the hands of strangers

Update to this. The babies mother was pulled out shortly after. I can think of no closer experience to hell on Earth then to be a young mother pinned under concrete listening to your 9 month old cry for over a day.

Marine Engineers disembarking in disaster zone. No guns incidentally which is something I was curious about. I assumed this would be a strictly disarmed mission, but this is the confirmation.

SOUTHCOM update for June 28

At the direction of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), U.S. military capabilities continue arriving in Venezuela today to support ongoing U.S. earthquake relief efforts requested by the Venezuelan government and led by the U.S. State Department.

  • A Contingency Response Element (CRE), comprised of approximately 100 airmen with airfield management expertise and related equipment, arrived today to assist the Venezuelan government and aviation authorities with safely expanding the vital flow of inbound and outbound air traffic at Simón Bolivar International Airport. The last of five U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster cargo aircraft transporting the CRE will arrive in Venezuela today. The CRE enhances assistance provided by a U.S. military Airfield Assessment Team that completed necessary repairs making Simón Bolivar International Airport operational. The Assessment team continues to work with local Venezuelan officials and the U.S. interagency response team to help resume other critically needed airport operations.

  • U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft are transporting personnel and equipment.

  • U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys continue transporting key personnel and resources.

  • About 130 U.S. Marine Corps personnel will arrive at the Port of La Guaira, which was rendered closed by the earthquake, within the next 24 hours. In coordination with local authorities and the Department of State, they will open the port for much needed supplies and equipment to reach the heaviest hit parts of Venezuela by sea.

  • U.S. Marine Corps UH-1Y Venom helicopters, embarked with the U.S. amphibious transport dock USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28), are supporting aerial assessments of areas impacted by the earthquakes and transporting U.S. State Department personnel leading the U.S. disaster relief mission.
  • U.S. Sailors and Marines from USS Fort Lauderdale delivered critically needed assistance supplies to the Port of La Guaira with a Landing Craft on the morning of June 28.

  • U.S. Army CH-47 Chinooks and crews from Joint Task Force-Bravo will begin arriving in Venezuela today to provide airlift support.

  • U.S. Space Force, through its SOUTHCOM component, continues providing satellite imagery of impacted communities and damaged infrastructure to aid disaster relief planners with assessing where immediate live-saving and aid efforts are needed most, and prioritizing requests for disaster response capabilities.
SOUTHCOM operations are completely self-sustaining, with personnel on the ground requiring zero local resources as they work tirelessly to deliver critical relief to the people of Venezuela.

I'm gonna tell you why this quake was so uniquely devastating.

First, quakes can't really be predicted, as we all know, but in Venezuela, there seems to be a pattern: A big (at least for this country), potentially catastrophic quake happens every ~30 years. 1900 had the biggest quake on record, a 7.7. Then we have one in Cumana in 1929, then another one in Caracas in 1967, then in Sucre in 1997. It had been 29 years since the Sucre quake. To be fair, a lot of quakes did happen inbetween, but they almost never caused any major damage, the latest "strong" quake was back in 2018 and it was felt all over the country, being a 7.3. It was really deep though, so it didn't cause any damage.

Well, considering that... There's pretty much zero seismic culture here. Earthquake drills? Never had one, and keep in mind, when I was in school the '97 quake was still a relatively recent event. Even Japanese experts warned us that a big quake was coming, around 25 years ago. Technically we do have construction codes demanding buildings to be seismic-resistant, but of course...

Corruption. The government is rotten to the core. You can, literally, just buy a driver's license. And that's why the past few months there's been ~2000 people dead in traffic accidents, almost all of them involving bikes. So, of course you can just bribe your way out of building anything that complies with construction codes. There's a reason the Chavista pet project, Mision Vivienda, was built with fucking styrofoam inside, zero reinforcements. Vargas, the state most hit, was severely damaged by landslides back in 99, right when Chavez was already in office (and denied international aid over his retarded "antiimperialist" schizo ramblings), so of course it had to be rebuilt. And of course they just built sloppy shit, bribing authorities and cutting costs, despite Vargas being well known as being especially vulnerable to earthquakes, floods and landslides.

Okay, the earthquake finally happens and basically destroys Vargas again, and a bunch of Caracas too. The dead pile up. They need to be rescued, they need aid. Well, the government doesn't just not help. It doesn't just hinder, it actively sabotages relief efforts over bullshit protocols and bureaucracy. Of course we all know they just want to steal all the aid coming here. People who could have been saved days ago end up dying horribly because of course Diosdado and Delcy need a new Toyota Hilux or whatever.

And the survivors? You could think they just get insurance or whatever. Wrong. Venezuela lacks insurance culture, and it has for a long while, of course, Chavismo is to blame for this as well. So not only they lost their homes, they basically have no way to get them back. And it's all on purpose, the chavistas will either build shoddy sloppy Mision Vivienda styrofoam buldings again, or simply do nothing and let them become homeless.

What worries me the most is not the disaster, is what will happen next. We're already pummeled by a massively retarded and sociopathic regime, unthinkable economic and political policies, etc. And now a fucking natural disaster. With very much preventable damage according to experts from Japan and Chile btw.

How the fuck did SYRIA send more aid than Canada lmfao
India's aid contingent is very small, tbh. Barely 48 guys and that's including the people from their American province, mogged by El Salvador. SAD! PATHETIC!

Still, much better than Venezuela's old friends. China and Russian are missing beyond token declarations, from the Russians I get it, new management in Venezuela, not their problem anymore. But from China, the supposed rising superpower, has yet to send a USAR team or aid directly? The fucking Syrians, Turks and I even saw on a Instagram reel today, fucking Barbados sent aid. SAD! PATHETIC!

Even more SAD! PATHETIC! from the CCP because the local Chinese community (for example, the one located in Margarita Island sent enough to fill a couple of trucks) has donated aid and Chinese-run firms have also send supplies. But I get it, I get it, they had to deal with their own Nine Erreven.

EDIT: @Nindo unprivate your profile or PM me, I found some people that could check the cracks in your home.
