UN confirms at least 50,000 missing.

Well they did it. Just see many venezuelan "journalists" from Miami in Xitter: just talking how Chavismo is bad and its their fault, and talking about 51th State
Sad to see the fuckers are still deep in Reza syndrome. A disregard to when you should not aggressively, cynically proselytizing your face to a population with bigger problems to care about.

Good luck and stay safe. I’m hoping our ships are getting there soon so American military can oversee aid. I’m glad you’re ok. I was IRL worried about you.

Aid is already arriving and a number of rescue teams from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Colombia and El Salvador are already on the ground in La Guaira working.

I want the US military to go in there and bully the fuck out of whoever is diverting aid and blocking shit. With extreme prejudice.

As cathartic as that would be, its unlikely. For these sorts of missions the military leadership informs the host country what resources are being brought in and ask where they are needed. The American units will be working at the Venezuelan governments direction. Its also highly unlikely we are sending pipe hitters for a security mission beyond basic force protection personelle

What really bothers me is my folks place. I got a rental that I didn't like and was going to leave anyway. My folks don't really have anything other than their apartment and they also got the order to evacuate their home.

My cat is still a bit nervous, he has eaten a little and drank some water, out of my hand mostly.
Update on this: My folks, my parents. place got the second inspection done a short while, this team with more specialized engineers, checked their residential complex again and found no structural damages. This team, however, does not have authority to mark the buildings as habitable, they have to send their report to a higher authority. So, that's good news, hopefully my parents can go to their place again. They are itching to leave the hotel and go home.

Meanwhile, the building where my apartment is, officially, fucked. The specialized team detected fissures and various micro fissures across a number of beams and support columns. They let us in to retrieve our stuff and then they are restricting all access as they suspect it might collapse, the building is leaning slightly. All my stuff fits into a couple of suitcases, my cat's carrier and a backpack for my laptop (and where I keep my cat's stuff), so I got my stuff out and moved it all into the hotel in the meantime.

I think I'll stay over at my parents after they give them the all clear while I find a new place to stay and I'll help my dad with the repairs, I don't know how to apply plaster and install ceramic tiles and this seems like a good opportunity to learn how to do it.

I can’t stop browsing the list of people who are missing or found. So many young people died. RIP to all the Venezuelan baddies :(

Aftershock some time ago. M5.1, wasn't felt at the hotel but a neighbor called my dad and told him it was felt in the residential complex, no injuries or damages, yet.

A buddy sent me this via WhatsApp.

EDIT:

Attaching a better image from the USGS website. It also downgrades the aftershock to M4.7. Despite being at sea, no tsunami alert.

After the 2013 meteor in Chelyabinsk, I was watching news footage and wondering how many Russian speakers were also seeing this, and saying, "Do they know what those people were saying?" A few weeks later, PBS' NOVA aired a program about it, which has re-run many times, and it went "blah blah BEEP blah BEEEEEEEEEP blah blah blah BEEEEP" etc.

I do know that if there was a tsunami in the ocean, it was minimal. Does anyone know how the quake affected the large lakes in the region?

p.s. Time to donate to World Central Kitchen and/or Doctors Without Borders. Habitat for Humanity can use funds for later on.

If you feel so inclined, you can check this link for places to donate. If you are in the US, I recommend you go with the Venezuelan-American Chamber of Commerce Foundation (VACC), they work with Caritas Venezuela, the Catholic run organization that helps with donations, and has the best reputation amongst all the orgs in Venezuela, as aid and donations also became a way for people to exploit the goodwill of foreigners and of the diaspora via the use of "NGOs" that are just a front to steal donations. Also, I suggest you remain cautious with any GoFundMe or similar initiatives you see.

Do not donate to the local Red Cross organization as there is some suspicion of them being intervened by the government.

The VACC have their own link for donations (the donations link is using Stripe, one of the worst companies in the world, so you might want to be careful with it) but I believe they other ways you can donate, alternatively you can directly send to Caritas Venezuela.

The ones I have seen with my own eyes were the Yummy delivery drivers, a number of them were sent to distribute food and water at my parents residential complex. Which was a godsend as not only water and gas was cut, as a safety measure, in their place but also you couldn't cook with an electrical kitchen or grill because, despite the earthquake, the power rationing continues.
