I see he's bringing up "muh bad back" as to why he can't move or drive. Any Kiwis in wheelchairs wanna tell him to suck it up?
I was born with spina bifida. I always kind of get annoyed when people complain about back problems because often times, they expect a doctor to just prescribe very power narcotics to just block the pain. The human body does does work very well just on narcotics. For one thing, long term opiate use has very short term diminished returns. The addictive characteristics of narcotics make the pain symptoms much worse overtime.
The most important thing if you have back problems is to do a total approach. 1) keep your weight down. Based on your height, you want to be at low healthy weight. 2) maintain flexibility and strength. I used to weight lift when I was much younger. I can't do that anymore because my back has effectively declined at a very rapid rate. If I kept lifting weights, I could cripple myself. But at the same time, I need to continue work out with low impact exercise. So instead of running, I walk and swim exclusively. Instead of lifting weights, I do yoga. If I completely stopped working out, I would decline at a frightening rate.
The long term goal is to not make all the pain go away...its to make it manageable for your day to day life. The less medication you need to function on, the better for your long term health. But very often, and this is certainly not unique to Phil, people don't want to hear this.
I would be in a situation where I couldn't drive, couldn't work, and I would be on disability. I don't want to live like that. I want to remain active and I am not ready to just shutdown my life completely.
Like pretty much almost every aspect of Phil's life, he thinks he knows everything and everyone else is an idiot. I wouldn't be surprised he has back pain and problems. But if you took a professional athlete and put them on Phil's diet and lifestyle, in very sort order, they would have back problems as well. You can't sit on a couch for hours every day, facing a computer screen without having health problems.
But you will never get Phil to ever recognize that he needs to do something to make his health better, especially if it requires him to do any sort of work.
