💤 Inactive Andrew Dobson / Tom Preston / CattyN - STOP DOING SEXIST CRAP

Hate to admit it, the black-and-white short stories are actually quite readable - if not outright good*. I mean, they sort of follow a very same-y pattern, but they aren't terribly exectued.
"Untitled" and "Darkness" use the black and white quite nicely to convey a mood, and even though Dobson's style is still this rather dull and generic Rumiko Takahashi-ripoff, these comics do look decent enough.
And the content of these stories is something Dobson nowadays would never dare to do, too.

*I kind of feel dirty now.

I don't think it's exactly an outside opinion that Andrew has degenerated, not just artistically but morally and creatively as well. It's generally admitted he used to have potential if nothing else.

It's laziness and a bad attitude that's brought him to where he is now. He doesn't want to practice and push himself, has admitted as such and defended it, and without that your skills not only don't progress, they will in fact regress. Ask an athlete the difference between running a mile and not even walking much for a few months while you're recuperating from an injury and then trying to run a mile. Same thing with anything you do, and artistically, Andrew isn't even getting out of bed.

Who the fuck holds a burger like that?

It's just the first time I've seen comics made by Dobson that weren't ugly, derivative trash.

It didn't take him long to go from that to:

Probably one of the very few examples of something decent he made in my opinion.

He changed his style to imitate Watterson's work (whether he did it well or not is beside the point), the punch line works if only because it's self deprecating, something that Dobson almost never does, and at the same time, it's not really a bad mindset.

As much as I love Calvin and Hobbes and respect Watterson and his views, there's nothing wrong with profiting off of something you're good at. Even if it means having dumb merchandise be made for your strip.

Basically, it feels like he... TRIED!

Which he rarely does in general.

Which is Dobson's problem, he wants the fame and recognition, but without all the work.

I respect Watterson's refusal to merchandise. Being able to sacrifice hundreds of millions just because of personal integrity is class act behavior. He's not quite Alan Moore, who is so absurdly hostile to commercialism that he's openly and publicly despised every single adaptation of his work (although he has always allowed his collaborators to profit from these things he has refused any money at all for himself).

Still, even Watterson earned fuck you money on C&H. He was certainly comfortable enough he could say no to more. This is why people who bootleg C&H for shitty counterfeit merchandise are basically garbage and so is anyone who buys it knowing he doesn't approve of it.

The obviously vulgar example of completely whoring out would be Jim Davis of Garfield fame. Even with him, though, who cares? It's a shitty comic strip but nobody's forcing anyone to read it or buy the avalanche of shitty merch it generates.

Another example, though, would be Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts and one of the biggest admitted influences on Watterson himself. Of course, the world of Peanuts is focused on social situations with an insecure Charlie Brown, while Calvin is introspective and just plain weird to the point he is obviously not neurotypical, having only one non-imaginary friend. Schulz merchandised out the ass. He was possibly the wealthiest cartoonist of his time.

You'd have to be a real dick to hold it against him.

So far as I know, Watterson never held anyone but himself to his own purist ideals.

What's sad is Dobbo's willingness to sell his soul, but at the same time, having a soul nobody would bother buying.

No, he's confident about his art. Confident he doesn't need to change anything, confident that it's good, confident people should love it (and mystified that they don't).

He's actually pretty fucking arrogant, even if he doesn't think he's the "best ever". (Though the number of times he's actually admitted someone else has better art than he does is scanty enough that no examples come to mind off the top of my head.)

Never confuse Andrew's pity-whoring for a lack of confidence, he thinks he's fan-fucking-tastic, he's just so touchy and weak that he goes to pieces every time he's confronted by the fact that so few other people in the world think so. He's the equivalent of a guy in a bar who has all the confidence in the world when he strolls up to the hottest woman there and tosses out his best (shitty) come-on line, and is then emotionally devastated when she tells him to get lost.
If his SYAC is anything to go by, deep down he always considered himself a lovable loser without the lovable.
It's called self-fulfilling prophecy.

Well, it's been a while...time to mock Trump again.

"Hey everyone! I found something from the past that could be considered racist kinda maybe! Asspat me!"

Hey, remember when Trump gave up the salary he gets for being President and donates it to a charity instead?

What have YOU done to help people, Dobson?

Andrew, you could go out and work on building affordable housing for the homeless right now if you want to. Well, maybe not right now. Tomorrow morning.

You're not going to, so maybe shut the fuck up.

Well, it is pretty easy to avoid a collision with a peanut farm, Dobson.

Seeing as how at hundreds of acres, they can't exactly sneak up on you.

You peanut brain.

Hey, remember when that one cartoonist gave up on doing anything for his Patreon subscribers to avoid "work" and now still builds virtual block houses for himself?
