Military benefits are rather nice but the actual "I can retire for the rest of my life" sorta money truly comes from a 15+ year commitment, and moving your way up the ranks (if he was a CDR or around there he wasn't making a lot of money, even engineers aren't part of that officer tier which is the actual pay is in career military). Plus benefits and pay compound with time, if you do a 3 year stint and then leave with any form of disability, you're not looking at a lot of money honestly.
