Modern day US Marines are not meant to storm hotly contested beaches, that's exactly why they got rid of all of their tanks. They will create a breach in any coastal defenses using air and naval fires first before making a landing and establishing a beach head. With modern sensors and weapons, storming contested, well fortified coastal positions is just not something that needs to be done anymore. The USMC of today and of the near-term future is a light, flexible, and fast amphibious infantry force which derives most of its combat capability from supporting assets.
