Hello, time for another Magic The Gathering sperg so you can fully appreciate how dumb Jeremy is for buying the new set.
Honestly I thought his revival of Unsleeved Media would be a one off, so didn't think we'd be here again.
TLDR This new Turtles set is absolute dogshit and Jeremy is an idiot for buying it and Jeremy, the investment guru is once again buying high and selling low, hopping back in at the worst time.
This new turtles set epitomises three of the worst things happening in Magic right now.
First, Universes Beyond slop. Back in 2023 they released something new and exciting an entire set of cards based in the LOTR universe. It was cool, exciting, fit the theme of the game and, crucially, made a lot of money. Hasbro has been chasing this dragon ever since.
UB is inherently polarising. People who play Magic all like Magic and so will not be annoyed by seeing Magic the Gathering things in their Magic the Gathering product. Pick any other franchise to force in and inherently you create some division. WOTC used to be smarter about UB to prevent people getting annoyed they were paying to see adverts in their escapist hobby.
But, the Hasbro execs are convinced they can make the golden goose lay infinite eggs, so now not only is UB extremely intrusive and impossible to avoid, no care whatsoever is made to ensure the franchise fits within the themes of MTG. Spiderman, fucking Star Trek, throw it all in and turn this shit into MUGEN.
So, with this turtles set being the second UB flavour dud in a row, players aren't the most happy with it right now.
The second reason why Quartering is really dumb for hopping in now, is that WOTC has effectively doubled its release schedule. It used to be you'd get 3-4 standard sets a year and 1-2 supplemental sets for other formats. But, given the Pokémon boom and Hasbro bleeding money buying and selling IPs at a loss, it is leaning on Magic to prop up it's otherwise failing businesses. Last year they released six main sets and are threatening to release seven this year. And don't think they won't still crank out other sets as well either.
So, if this fat idiot is committed to wasting 10K each time a set comes out, I could easily see him burning through 100K a year.
People are burned out by this turbo-charged release schedule. Sets don't have time to breathe, formats are in a constant state of flux and nobody has the time or money to keep up.
Third and final, this atrocious set is also a mini-set. Smaller sets have a long history in Magic and they've always been a bit of a thorn and WOTC actually stopped doing them, but now they have to churn out so much crap a year, to make it feasible, small sets are back in.
However, before these small sets were drafted (draft and sealed formats being the backbone of MTG for decades) with supporting larger sets. But now, thanks to corporate interest, TMNT will never deign to share design space with Spiderman, or god-forbid, actual MTG stuff.
So, not only is this sets very concept due to its intrusive and ill-fitting IP, disliked by a good chunk of the playerbase, not only is player interest way down due to the frequency of releases, but also the set itself is likely miserable to play. Which does wonder for the secondary market I can assure you.
Quartering likely knows all this and buys it anyway. He is a consumerist pig and the reason companies do shit like this.
Oh and the increased pricetag of UB means he won't have any chance of breaking even, and the art is ugly as sin, and they made it WOKE by joining in the blackwashing conspiracy against April O Neil.
