Man: the adult male of the species, born with no gametes (no current oral birth control that I'm aware of, physical exist)

Woman: the adult female of the species, born with complete gametes (some oral as well as physical birth control methods exist)

This covers the vast majority of people's understanding prior to recently. And works just fine as a baseline.
