Any normal person would be this deep into sobriety and think "wow I feel so much better right now than I did when I was wasted all the time" but to be Nick is to live in a hell of your own creation so of course he misses booze and coke.

nobody should expect a probation violation. This is Nick preparing his story for his PO. He did whippets a long time ago. But it was before his conviction and he discovered after his conviction that all drugs are bad and never does them now. He has set up a situation where it will still be necessary to prove that he is doing whippets now. He is admitting that he did it so that any evidence that he did it in the past falls flat.
