I’m a 37-year-old trans person living in Portland, Oregon. I moved here with my spouse in 2023 for asylum and a sanctuary city because we are both transgender and have been disowned by our families. After going through an extreme series of back-to-back horrible events I found myself leaning into art again for the first time since I was a kid to get myself through some of the hardest nights in my life.

This is here to make money and to be a living testament to mental health awareness. If I had succeeded in any previous attempts, none of this art would exist. Trans rights are human rights. Trans people exist and have always existed - and we will not be erased.

A brief note on the importance of gender affirming care (to me) (a):

Before starting HRT, I weighed nearly 500 lbs. I had stage 2 hypertension and I was prediabetic. I had just gone to the doctor for help with my hormones and HRT - which I began alongside some blood pressure medication. I was able to lose weight over time, likely Testosterone helped me have some more energy and getting HRT helped me find out I have hypothyroidism, too.

I'm now under 300 lbs, I have normal blood pressure, I can walk miles a day and I am no longer prediabetic. I am proudly out as a trans person and I identify as gender fluid - I want top surgery and do not want bottom surgery as of right now. I have never felt more confident in my body and happier in who I am than I do now. I am 37 years old and have thought about suicide and attempted many times over the course of my life. I am only now starting to feel like I'm able to live my life and I do not have a strong desire to end it, anymore.

I want to help other trans people understand that they are beautiful no matter what - and their journey is theirs to discover. I wish I could have had access to hormone blockers as a kid, but being trans didn't exist in my vocabulary until I was much older and had already escaped my home. Many trans kids don't even know they're trans - they learn about the WORDS until later, but they know the same feelings as any other trans person.

Feeling like you don't belong in your own body is a thought that resonates with many trans folx the moment we hear it leave someone else's lips. Feeling alien and different is in our nature. If I had the words as a child, I would have told you very stubbornly that I was indeed trans.

I was furious that the only power rangers my friends would let me play as were pink or yellow - I was not like either of THOSE girls. I wanted to be a boy from a young age - but I thought it was impossible so I let it be a dream like being a fairy princess or a superhero was. I had no idea it was possible and if I had I would have been so happy for my new future as a boy.

The only difference from today would be I would have had a lot more time to enjoy my confidence and newfound love for life - but I'm happy I still have time.

A reminder letter to myself (a):

I’ve been tasked with writing a letter to my future self. I want to be candid, I only am writing this because there was a promise of a cash prize. I’m sitting on the couch with Caleb, right now. Nothing noteworthy has happened today but my heart is aching, anyways. I’m struggling with money, sitting somewhere on the divide between jumping headfirst into some shitty retail job and fully investing my time into a glorious crashout era before the bitter end of the world. I don’t know what things will be like in the future. I don’t even know what tomorrow will look like. The world is in a state of disarray, the government is spreading disinformation every day about transgender people and I feel like it’s just me and Caleb, backed up by our two cats, versus the world.

I spent so many years discrediting my own ability to survive. But over the years I’ve been able to get a good dose of therapy to help with my past. I’ve met wonderful people and I’ve had amazing support over the last year - especially during a time when I felt like I was at rock bottom.

I’m a survivor. I am resilient. I used to balk at the word because it rang so hollow in my ears. But now I look back on the course of my life and I can see where my strengths lie. I am bafflingly stubborn. I am passionate about justice and I want the world to be a better place. I feel it in my bones that it is entirely possible for me to make a difference in this world.

None of the art on my pages would have been created if I had let myself fall victim to my mental health struggles. None of the love that I have felt. None of the world that I have learned about in the last short year would be available for me to see.

I’m just about to turn 37 as a transgender person. Most transgender people have an attempt before 24 and I’m one of them. But I don’t want to end my life, anymore. I have so much more to do on this Earth and I will use every breath that I have to speak up about these things. I want other trans people to know it’s never too late. I didn’t feel alive until I came out. I have thirty years of life to catch up on - I want to share it with other people and keep focusing on my family, myself and my art.

I don’t know what my mark on this world will be, but I hope I can at least spread some kindness and joy. Maybe my purpose is to share camaraderie in the trying times to come for transgender people. I’m not so sure, but I know that I’m not done here and that I have so much to prove, still.

I’ll always love me. I’m the only me there will ever be and I hope that means something to the world. It does to me.

It’ll be okay. Deep breaths and remember - keep moving forward. Even if it’s just one step. It’s still forward.

I’m a trans person who moved out to Portland and lost my job. While focusing on my mental health, I started doing art again and I realized how much I missed it in my life and I’m trying to make it full-time now. It’s tough sometimes I don’t even have money for food, but I’m finally doing what makes me happy and I don’t want to let it to.

I’d love some support to be able to keep making art especially right now when things are very bleak and difficult to navigate through. I think it’s a lot cheaper to support individual artists than it is to pay into a giant machine that steals designs and ideas and just regurgitate them back to you and until you’re kind of happy with what you like.
